Cape Fear Community College, in partnership with Yamaha Marine, offers training in marine engine maintenance. Five, 96-hour courses are offered.<\/p>\n

Yamaha is committed to providing qualified technicians to the marine industry through their relationship with CFCC. The four courses offered have a progressive hierarchy and are intended to train technicians towards entry level employment at a Yamaha dealership. The base requirement of Yamaha is the Introduction To Outboard Systems course, needed in order to proceed into the advanced Maintenance Certification Program (MCP). The Maintenance Certification Program is segregated into four engine horsepower groups. Completion of ITOS qualifies the student to register for either MCP Portables (9.9-15h\/p carbureted) or MCP MidLine (30-70 h\/p EFI). Afterwhich, the student is qualified to enroll in MCP: Inline (150\/2.7L and 175-200\/2.8L), and then MCP: V engine (250-300 h\/p V6). CFCC offers several of the classes at different locations between New Hanover and Pender Counties.<\/p>\n

Yamaha Certification<\/h3>\n

The Yamaha Intro to Outboard Systems course is the prerequisite required to pursue subsequent Yamaha engine modules. Registration in Yamaha Marine University is included in each course. Students receive a Yamaha certificate upon successful completion of each course.<\/p>\n

Course Information<\/h4>
Intro to Outboard Systems<\/h6>\n

This fundamental class is the required entry level course by Yamaha before proceeding into the MCP advanced classes. ITOS covers the fundamentals of boat nomenclature, outboard electrical (charging and ignition), electro-hydraulic (TnT), steering and fuel (carb and EFI) systems. Fours stroke theory of operation and gearcase function are also addressed. Timing variation and Fuel-air density with stoichiometric theory are addressed. Given time availability, students will also receive forklift training and certification, and hands-on labs.

MCP PORTABLES<\/h6>\n

The 9.9-15 h\/p outboards are carbureted and are extremely popular nationwide as either primary or auxiliary power, tiller and remote control. Familiarity with OE service intervals of 20, 100, 500 and 100 hours will be attained.

Midrange Marine Maintenance<\/h6>\n

This course focuses on the mid product line of 30-70 h\/p EFI outboards. Students will become familiar with factory specified requirements and detailed procedures of service intervals at 20, 100, 500 and 1000 hours.

Inline Marine Maintenance<\/h6>\n

The bread and butter segment of Yamaha outboards occupying the highest percentage of units in their product line: 150 (2.7L) and the 2.8L (175 \/ 200) InLine four cylinder engines. Students will become familiar with factory specified requirements and detailed procedures of service intervals at 20, 100, 500 and 1000 hours.

V Marine Maintenance<\/h6>\n

This 250-300 platform delivers incredible torque and speed installed on applications from offshore center consoles and bass boats, to pontoons. Competent student demonstration of the 20, 100, 500 and 1000 hour service intervals is required to complete this course positioning the student with greater employment opportunities across the market.

  • Students entering this program must be able to perform hands-on mechanical tasks, including lifting equipment, using tools, and working in shop environments.<\/li>\n
  • They should have sufficient manual dexterity to assemble, disassemble, and troubleshoot marine engines.<\/li>\n
  • Students must be able to read technical manuals, follow diagnostic procedures, and interpret system data.<\/li>\n
  • Adequate vision and hearing are required to identify mechanical issues and ensure safety.<\/li>\n
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail are essential.<\/li>\n
