How to Use the Online Reader for NetLibrary eBooks
1 - Locate the eBook you want through the CFCC Library Catalog just as you would a print book. Do not limit your search.
2 - Instead of a call number, you will see CFCC eBook (Online). Click on the title (which is a hyperlink).
3 - Select the link Cape Fear CC users click here to access this resource.
4 - Click on View this eBook.
If you are off-campus, at this point you will have to authenticate using Campus Cruiser. Depending on your computer, you might need to install the free Adobe Reader plug-in the first time you read an eBook.
Screen Layout
When you are viewing an eBook, your screen appears split into two frames. On the left are tools for finding specific parts of the eBook; the right frame displays the actual pages of text.
How to Turn “ePages”
The current page number generally displays in the top right of the online reader page in red. “Next” takes you to the next page in the full-text. To jump to a particular page, type that page number in the “Page” box and click “Go,” or use the tools in the left frame.
How to Search Inside an eBook
You can search for a word or phrase in the full-text of an eBook by typing in the “Search” box in the left frame. If the searched term is anywhere in the eBook, there will be links to the exact page(s) containing the term. In many eBooks, the search terms will appear highlighted in yellow.
Viewing Time
You can actively view the full-text eBook (turning pages, searching within the full-text, etc.) as long as you wish. If you are not actively viewing for 15-minutes, it returns to the library for someone else to view. You can access the eBook again by logging back in.
How to Copy and Print Selected Text
To print a page, always choose the printer icon--not “File-Print” from your browser’s pull-down menu.
If no printer icon appears on the screen, right click on the page of text and use Command-P.
Copyright
Short sections can be copied and pasted into other documents using the pull-down “Edit” menu.
For PDF-formatted eBooks, use the “Select Tool” on the Adobe Acrobat toolbar.
All the same copyright and citation rules apply to eBooks as to physical books.
Copying an entire eBook violates copyright laws and NetLibrary takes precautions to protect those copyrights. If a suspicious usage pattern indicates excessive copying, the activity is logged and NetLibrary sends a copyright warning message.
