Adult High School
The Adult High School (AHS) is a credit-based program designed for students who have not yet completed high school and wish to earn their diploma. There is no cost to students!
Graduates receive an Adult High School Diploma issued by Cape Fear Community College and the New Hanover or Pender County Board of Education. The AHS diploma is the equivalent of any public or private high school diploma and is recognized by employers, colleges, and universities throughout the country.
To enroll in the AHS program, follow the steps below:
STEP 1 Prepare for New Student Orientation
All new students must bring the following documents to orientation. These items are required to enroll in the Adult High School Program:
Required Documents for ALL Students:
- A valid photo ID that includes your birth date and signature
- Social Security card

An official transcript from your previous high school(s)
- If no transcript is available, you will begin the program with zero (0) credits
Additional Requirements for Students Age 16 or 17:
- A parent or legal guardian must attend the first 30 minutes of orientation

Proof of high school withdrawal
- Acceptable forms include:
- A notarized Parental Consent form (Students without a completed and notarized form will not be eligible to attend orientation)
STEP 2 Submit Transcript and School Withdrawal Documentation
Please submit the following:
- Official High School Transcript
- Proof of High School Withdrawal (required for students under age 18)

STEP 3 Attend New Student Orientation
To complete the enrollment process, all students are required to attend both an Orientation session and a Testing session. CFCC Downtown (Wilmington) Campus, McLeod (S) Building, Room S-105
- Downtown Campus: Orientation and testing dates are listed in the schedule below.
- Surf City and Burgaw Locations: Testing will be scheduled after Orientation is completed.

General Adult High School Information
Class Structure
Adult High School (AHS) courses are offered in nine-week sessions. Each course includes 68 instructional hours, and students must complete a minimum of 64 hours to be eligible for course credit.
Face-to-Face Classes
In-person classes are held on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 5:30 PM – 9:30 PM at all available AHS locations.
Afternoon classes (1:00 PM – 5:00 PM) are offered only at the Downtown Campus.
Online Classes
AHS courses are also available online through Edmentum. Online classes follow the same 68-hour format as in-person courses. To earn credit, students must be actively logged in and participating for at least 64 hours during the nine-week session.
Graduation Requirements
To earn an Adult High School Diploma, students must complete a total of 22 credits in the following subject areas:
- English – 4 credits
- Mathematics – 4 credits
- Math I, Math II, Math III, and one additional math course
- Science – 3 credits
- Earth Science, Biology, and Physical Science
- Social Studies – 4 credits
- World History, American History, Civics, Economics and Personal Finance
- Health/Physical Education – 1 credit
- Must include CPR certification
- Electives – 6 credits
Official AHS Transcripts
To request an official AHS transcript:
- Complete the AHS Transcript Request Form
- Follow the directions on the form for paying the required transcript fee.
- Each AHS transcript costs $5.00. The $5.00 fee is waived for any student entering other CFCC programs.
Diplomas
Once graduated, students will be called and must pick up their diplomas from the AHS office in S-110. AHS diplomas are only issued once. Copies or duplicates are not available.
