Starting in the Fall of 2018, Cape Fear Community College offers a graphic design certificate program consisting of 6 courses and 264 hours of instruction. The coursework will focus on graphic design principles, Adobe Design software and web applications for graphic designers.
The program is led by Associate Professor Marsha Mills, who brings 30 years of experience in graphic design including 11 years as a professor at the Art Institute and 12 years at Wake Tech Community College. Marsha is a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and has been a designer for several major corporations. Her teaching highlights include logo design, typography, print production, portfolio creation, and much more.
“My focus is to create a program that is inexpensive, informative, and practical,” said Professor Mills. “My students graduate with a strong working knowledge of graphic design principles, typography, layout and information organization.”
Students can expect to learn current design and technology. Using state of the art software and resources, the Graphic Arts faculty will train students in all areas of design as well as logo creation, color theory and newly emerging areas in the field.

Foundations of Design.* This course covers the application of visual elements and design principles in advertising and graphic design through lectures, theory, hands-on developmental process, drawing, sketching and some software introduction. Topics include creation of various designs such as logos, advertisements, posters and signage. Upon completion, students should be able to effectively apply design principles and visual elements to projects. Prerequisite: None.

Adobe Design I.* This course introduces the creation of basic designs used for business marketing . The course provides an overview of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign software. Students will learn the basics of drawing and vector creation in Illustrator, image manipulation in Photoshop, and page layout techniques in lnDesign by developing simple collateral materials, posters, menus, and personal business cards. Upon completion students will have a foundational knowledge of the three programs. Prerequisite: Foundations of Design.

Adobe Design II.* This course follows Adobe I and involves advanced graphic designs concepts used for business marketing utilizing Illustrator, Photoshop and lnDesign. Students will be assigned concepts to work with to learn more advanced techniques of all three programs. Prerequisite: Foundations of Design, Adobe I.

Web Application for Graphic Design.* This course provides an introduction to web development software suites. Topics include the creation of web graphics, and addressing problems particular to website display using appropriate software, web graphics file types, optimization, RGB color, web typography, elementary special effects, transparency, animation, slicing, basic photo manipulation, and other related topics. Prerequisite: Foundations of Design, Adobe I.

Photoshop for Graphic Design.* This course is designed to provide a solid foundation in the basics of Adobe Photoshop. Topics include techniques such as layer masks and clipping masks, removing backgrounds, create custom shapes and a variety of effects; photo editing, text effects and design will be applied to your Capstone Portfolio project. Prerequisite: Foundations of Design, Adobe I, Adobe II, Web Application.

Capstone/ Portfolio Design.* This course covers the organization and presentation of a design/advertising or graphic art portfolio and appropriate related materials. Emphasis is placed on development and evaluation of the portfolio, design and production of a resume and self-promotional materials, and interview techniques. Upon completion, students should be able to prepare and professionally present an effective portfolio and related self-promotional materials. Prerequisite: Foundations of Design, Adobe I, Adobe II, Web Application, Photoshop.
