BASIC SKILLS
The Basic Skills Department includes the following programs: General Education Development (GED), Adult High School (AHS), English as a Second Language (ESL), Workplace Literacy, Family Literacy, Compensatory Education (CED), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). Courses are designed to increase reading, mathematics, written, and verbal communication skills.
The following individuals are welcome to take our courses:
- Individuals 18 years or older without a high school diploma.
- Individuals with a high school diploma who want to upgrade their reading, math, and/or writing skills prior to taking a college entrance or work place exam.
- Individuals 16 & 17 years old if they have officially withdrawn from high school and provide a school release and notarized parental release form.
Classes are located on all Cape Fear Community College Campuses and at various off-campus sites in both New Hanover and Pender counties.
All classes are free of charge.
GED Classes:
The General Educational Development Program is designed for adults whose academic skills are at 9th grade level or above, who have not completed high school, and who wish to earn a GED diploma. Students receive instruction to prepare for the five areas of the GED exam. Each student will receive individualized classroom instruction as well as small and large group class work. Teachers give careful attention to each student's specific needs to achieve their academic goals. Each student is given the opportunity to spend as much time as necessary to learn or review new skills.

AHS CLASSES:
The Adult High School Diploma Program is designed for adults whose academic skills are at 9th grade level or above, have not completed high school, and who wish to earn a high school diploma. The AHS diploma is recognized by colleges and universities throughout the nation and is equivalent to any public or private high school diploma.
To graduate from AHS a student must have 20 credits and pass the North Carolina Competency test. Graduates will receive an ADULT HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA issued by Cape Fear Community College and the New Hanover or Pender County Board of Education.

ESL CLASSES:
The English as a Second Language Program is designed for adults whose native language is not English. Classes are designed to serve the needs of those individuals who have no English skills up to and including individuals who are preparing for university study. ESL classes help individuals develop skills to get a job, assist their children with schoolwork, better understand American culture and history, and improve communication skills. In addition, TOEFL classes are offered to assist individuals preparing to enter a college or university and need to pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language.

Work Place Literacy Classes:The Work Place Literacy Program is designed for adults who wish to strengthen their literacy skills and/or increase their English Language skills to perform better on the job and/or get their high school equivalency diploma. Classes are conveniently located at the work site.

Family Literacy Classes:
The Family Literacy Program is designed for adults who wish to strengthen their literacy skills and/or get their high school equivalency diploma. In addition, the Family Literacy program provides a holistic family-focused approach by providing adult education for parents/caregivers, literacy-focused early childhood education, repetitive child and parent quality time and life skills education, peer support, and effective parenting education. The most important feature of family literacy is that it strengthens a family and builds a learning team.

CED CLASSES:
The Compensatory Education Program is designed for adults who have been diagnosed as developmentally disabled or who have been medically pronounced as functioning at a level equivalent to mental retardation resulting from head injury or brain damage. Instruction is designed to help individuals with reading, life skills, money management, community living, health habits, problem solving, and vocational skills. The goal of this program is to help individuals acquire skills and abilities needed to become more independent and self-directed and to meet and manage community, social, work, and personal adult responsibilities.

ABE CLASSES:
Adult Basic Education Program is designed for adults with academic skills at 8th grade level or below and who wish to upgrade their reading, writing, & math skills. Once a student has built his/her skills up to the 9th grade level, he/she can enter into either the AHS or GED program.
