This course is designed to teach theory of celestial bodies. This course prepares individuals in technique for finding one's position at sea using sextant observations of heavenly bodies. Course work includes preliminary consideration of the movements of the navigational starts, planets, moon, and sun. Students will receive instruction on the theory and use of a sextant. Wooden Half-Boat Model MakingJuly 12, 2016 through July 21, 2016Instructor: Bayne

Begin your woodworking, model making, or boatbuilding experience on a small scale. You will be taught how to read a set of plans and use the basic woodworking tools most commonly found in a boatbuilder's tool kit to shape a half-model of a North Carolina Shad Boat. Students will construct the models using the lift model, which is one of the easiest and most accurate of half models to make. The class is organized so you can successfully complete your model in a step-by-step procedure and be ready to start applying a finish. Tools will be provided, but students must supply wood for the model (3/4in x 8in x 10ft - cypress, pine, or juniper).

Create beautiful wooden masterpieces using a lathe and other woodturning tools. You'll learn the history of woodturning and receive a basic introduction to woodturning, tools, techniques, and products. You will turn and create several different items during class. Your instructors from the Wilmington Area Woodturners Association (WAWA) will offer ideas on setting up a woodturning workshop and marketing your products. Registration fee includes use of equipment and tools plus a wood blank kit required for class.
