GE Vernova Hitachi Expands Partnership with CFCC to Name Nuclear Technology Lab

Wilmington, NC (January 29, 2026) – Cape Fear Community College has received a generous donation from GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, furthering their long-standing partnership with the global manufacturer and leading to the naming of the college’s Nuclear Maintenance Technology Lab as the GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Lab. This gift demonstrates the partnership’s commitment to advancing technical education and workforce development in the nuclear energy field. Funds from the donation will directly support the Nuclear Technology program at CFCC, which prepares students for in-demand careers in energy production, plant maintenance, and nuclear safety.
“GE Vernova Hitachi’s partnership has been vital to the success of our Nuclear Technology program,” said Jim Morton, CFCC President. “Their continued investment ensures that our students are trained on state-of-the-art equipment and have the resources they need to succeed in a field that is critical to our region and the nation.”
Since the creation of the GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Technology Scholarship in 2015, the company has supported 53 CFCC students, contributing more than $100,000 in scholarship funds. This year alone, 11 students have received $3,000 each to help advance their education and training in nuclear technology.
Since 1993, GE Vernova Hitachi has donated nearly $400,000 to Cape Fear Community College, demonstrating a decades-long commitment to education and workforce development in the Cape Fear region. In 2007, the company donated $175,000 to help launch the Nuclear Technology Program.
“Partnerships like this one are at the foundation of CFCC’s mission,” added Morton. “We are grateful for GE Vernova Hitachi’s sustained investment in our students, our facilities, and the future of clean energy.”
“Scheduled outages and plant modification work are essential to keeping nuclear power plants running safely and reliably,” said Todd Fischer, GE Vernova Hitachi Operations Leader. “As the industry faces a growing shortage of skilled technicians to perform these complex tasks, we are excited to partner with CFCC in addressing this workforce gap.”
The nuclear industry is rapidly growing in both our region and throughout the United States, creating a demand for trained nuclear technicians. To learn more about Cape Fear Community College’s Nuclear Technology program, visit cfcc.edu/nuclear-technology/ .
