Breakdown of the Section Codes

First Letter = Campus Location

D Downtown Campus
N North Campus
B Burgaw Center
T Surf City Center
I Internet class – 100% online, student may participate in class at any time (Asynchronous)
H Honors class – Reserved for Honors Program Students Only (the H may show anywhere in the section code)

Second Letter (sometimes a third) = Type of class

E Evening class
S Synchronous Internet class. Student must participate online in class at pre-established meeting times.
L Blended class, Less than 51% online – Mostly seated class with some online instruction
W has a RISE Co-Requisite class requirement
Y Hybrid class – Over 50% online – Some scheduled seated class & some online instruction that students may participate in at any time.

Third is numbers = section of course, 01, 02, 03 etc…

If the last digit is a number, it is a FULL TERM CLASS. If the last digit IS NOT a number, see below:

A 1st Mini Session ( Term starts the first day of full-term and ends mid-point of the term)
Z 2nd Mini Session (Term starts mid-point of the full-term and ends on the last day of full term)
K 12 week Session ( Late starting term )
X 4-Week Session

Section DL Downtown Wilmington Blended Class – (Less than 51% Online)
Section DW Downtown Wilmington – Co-Requisite Class Required –
Section DY Hybrid Class- Downtown Wilmington (Over 50% Online)
Section N North Campus Day Class
Section NE North Campus Evening Class
Section NL Blended Class – North Campus (Less than 51% Online)
Section NY Hybrid Class – North Campus (Over 50% Online)
Section H Reserved for Honors Program Students Only

Section TY Hybrid – Surf City Center (Over 50% Online)
Section I (Asynchronous) Internet Class, 100% online. Student may participate in class at any time.
Section IS (Synchronous) Internet Class, 100% online. Student must participate in class at pre-established meeting times
Section IX Internet Winter Session Class
Section _A First Mini-Session Class (added on the end of sections above. i.e D02A )
Section _Z Second Mini-Session Class (added on the end of sections above. i.e D02Z )
Section _K 12-Week Session Class (added on the end of sections above. i.e D02K)
Section _W Has a RISE co-requisite course
Section_L=Blended Mostly seated class with less than 51% online instruction
Section_Y=Hybrid Some regularly scheduled seated class and over 50% online instruction that student can participate in at any time.

*Tip: If section ends in a number, then it is a full-term class

Asynchronous (I)

100% online

Asynchronous = complete class work at any time during given time frame.

Instructors provide materials, lectures, tests, and assignments that can be accessed during available time period.

No required live class meetings

Minimal Requirements:

  • Reliable Internet access
  • computer/laptop

Optimal:

  • Microphone
  • Webcam

Synchronous (IS)

100% online

Synchronous = students and instructors online at the same time for a class.

Instructors provide materials, lectures, tests, and assignments that can be accessed during available time period
AND Required live class meetings.

Minimal Requirements:

  • Strong Internet access
  • computer/laptop

Optimal:

  • microphone
  • webcam

Classroom + Online

Hybrid (Y)

51% – 99% online

Combo of classroom + online.

Asynchronous online instruction.

Regularly scheduled class meetings.

Minimal Requirements:

  • Reliable Internet access
  • Computer/laptop

Optimal:

  • Microphone
  • Webcam

Blended (L)

1% – 50% online

Combo of classroom + online.

Asynchronous online instruction.

Regularly scheduled class meetings.

Minimal Requirements:

  • Reliable Internet access
  • Computer/laptop

Optimal:

  • Microphone
  • Webcam
Please note: Computers and laptops are strongly recommended for completing online work. Tablets and phones are not recommended, but could be used to check grades and upcoming work. Chromebooks are not fully compatible with some learning management systems and may experience issues.
