CFCC Launches Apprenticeship Accelerator to Expand Workforce Pathways in New Hanover County

Wilmington, NC (April 15, 2026) – Cape Fear Community College has received a $3 million investment from The Endowment to support the launch of the Cape Fear for Careers: New Hanover County Apprenticeship Accelerator, a new initiative focused on expanding apprenticeship opportunities and strengthening the region’s workforce pipeline.
The program will build a comprehensive, employer-driven apprenticeship system designed to move more students from pre-apprenticeship into registered apprenticeship programs that lead directly to high-demand careers. By creating a dedicated Apprenticeship Department and expanding existing programs, CFCC will be able to better serve both students and local employers while contributing to long-term economic growth in New Hanover County.
“Apprenticeships are one of the most effective ways to connect education with real-world opportunity,” said Jim Morton, CFCC President. “This initiative allows us to expand those pathways, giving more students access to meaningful careers while helping local businesses build the skilled workforce they need to grow and thrive.”
CFCC currently supports over 250 active apprentices and partners with more than 123 local and regional businesses. The college has established strong apprenticeship pathways in industries such as electrical, welding, and automotive technology. The new initiative will expand opportunities into additional fields including information technology, accounting, business services, and healthcare.
Through this effort, CFCC will scale existing programs with local employers, workforce organizations, and educational institutions to create a coordinated, countywide approach to workforce development and talent retention.
As part of this expansion, CFCC is hiring key personnel to support the Apprenticeship Accelerator, including a Director of Apprenticeships, Manager of Apprenticeships, and Apprenticeship Advisor. These positions will play a vital role in growing apprenticeship opportunities and supporting student success. To apply for these positions, visit cfcc.edu/human-resources/cape-fear-careers/ .
CFCC will also host an Employer Information and Networking Event on April 29, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the downtown campus (G-Building, Room 101-A), in partnership with Apprenticeship NC. The free event will bring together employers from New Hanover and Pender counties to learn how registered apprenticeship programs operation, explore strategies for engaging youth talent, and connect with regional workforce partners. Whether businesses are new to apprenticeships or looking to expand existing program, the event will provide practical guidance and opportunities to strengthen workforce pipelines.
