Pre-Apprenticeship → Registered Apprenticeship
Earn. Learn. Build Your Future.
Start preparing for a high-paying career before you graduate. Through collaboration between Cape Fear Community College, New Hanover County Schools, and Pender County Schools, students can gain practical skills, connect with local employers, and transition into a paid Registered Apprenticeship.
Your 3-Step Pathway to Success

Graduate & Transition
Graduate high school and secure employment with an authorized apprenticeship employer within 120 days to unlock special state tuition waivers.
Earn While You Learn
Work as a paid employee receiving structured on-the-job training while completing college classes at CFCC, culminating in a US Department of Labor Journeyworker Credential.
What is a Pre-Apprenticeship?
A pre-apprenticeship allows high school students (ages 16+) to complete specialized Career & Technical Education (CTE) or tuition-free college coursework through CFCC’s Career & College Promise (CCP) program.
- Tuition-Free Coursework: Take eligible CFCC classes while still in high school.
- Direct Employer Connections: Meet regional employers actively seeking apprentice talent.
- Tuition Waiver Eligibility: Lay the groundwork for a full NC Community College tuition waiver post-graduation.
Available Pre-Apprenticeship Focus Areas
High school students can jumpstart their training in three core sectors:
Automotive Systems Technology
Master modern diagnostic tools, engine performance, brake systems, and electrical troubleshooting in high-tech automotive labs.

Carpentry & Construction
Learn framing, blueprint reading, site preparation, building safety, and tool operation directly alongside experienced construction professionals.
Financial Support & Tuition Waivers
