Honors Program at CFCC Launches Partnership with Transition Program for Young Adults

Wilmington, NC (October 7, 2026) – The Honors Program at Cape Fear Community College has launched a new partnership with the Transition Program for Young Adults (TPYA) to foster self-advocacy, creative expression, and inclusion. TPYA serves New Hanover County students ages 18–21 with disabilities, equipping them with essential life, vocational, and self-advocacy skills needed for their personal level of independence.
The initiative began with an interactive songwriting workshop led by Dr. John Hrebik, a CFCC English instructor and Honors Program coordinator known for integrating music into his writing and literature courses. During the session, TPYA students used David Bowie’s “cut-up technique”—a method of slicing and rearranging existing text to generate new meaning—to collaboratively craft an original song about overcoming obstacles.
Building on the success of the workshop, students from CFCC’s Honors American Literature course will work alongside TPYA participants to organize an Open Mic Event on Tuesday, October 27, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Union Station (Room U170).
“Our goal in sharing this milestone is to highlight the incredible talent and resilience of these young adults,” said Dr. Hrebik. “We hope this inspires others to look for ways to partner with TPYA and include these extraordinary students in their own projects.”
The Open Mic event is free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public.
