Justina DeVito Transfers to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

After earning her Associate in Science from Cape Fear Community College in May 2025, Justina DeVito transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Since then, she’s gotten involved in campus organizations, gained hands-on experience in arts education, and earned a place in UNC’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media.
We caught up with Justina to hear more about what she’s been up to since graduating from CFCC and how her time here helped prepare her for the next step.
What activities, opportunities, or accomplishments are you most proud of since transferring?

Since transferring to UNC in 2025 as a junior after getting my Associate in Science, I’ve been involved as the Director of Communications for Transfers at UNC, which is a club designed only for transfer students and has around 2,600+ members.
I’m also a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America. For my senior capstone next semester, I will be working directly with the organization on a campaign for Peacock and NBC, with the goal of earning an invitation to compete against other universities at the Bateman Case Study Competition in NYC!
I am currently a Community Engagement Intern for the Durham Performing Arts Center for the fall semester, and it has been such a fun experience! I help with all of their public-facing programs that support middle school and high school students in getting into the arts. I’ve met such a diverse group of people through it, and helping the younger generation is so fulfilling.
An accomplishment I’m most proud of since transferring was being accepted into the Hussman School of Journalism and Media! It’s one of the top journalism schools in the country, and being able to learn from industry professionals and really hone in on what I’m good at has been something I never thought I’d be able to achieve.
How did your time at CFCC help prepare you for this next step?

I reflect on my time at CFCC so often, and each time I do, I’m reminded of how pivotal those two years truly were. CFCC didn’t just prepare me academically; it gave me the space to discover my voice, build unwavering confidence, and step into my potential.
The support and opportunities I found there transformed the way I see what’s possible for myself. It taught me to advocate for my goals and trust my abilities, ensuring that when I took the leap into UNC, I wasn’t just ready to adapt but prepared to thrive.
