Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, municipal governments, or private enterprises. This program utilizes state commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited to, criminal investigation, juvenile laws, civil process, law enforcement driver training, ABC laws, motor vehicle laws, patrol techniques, court procedures, emergency responses, and ethics and community relations.

Students must complete and pass all units of study to receive a certificate. Upon successfully passing the certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission, students may seek job opportunities with state, county, and municipal governments in North Carolina. In addition, knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired in this course of study qualify individuals for job opportunities with private industrial, retail, and private security enterprises.

Course Technical & Physical Requirements

To be successful in this course, students must be able to:

  • This course requires sponsorship by a law enforcement agency.
  • All students in the Basic Law Enforcement Training program are expected be 20 years old, possess a high school diploma/GED, pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver’s license, be a US citizen, pass a medical and drug screen examination, pass a 10th-grade reading level test.
  • Students must complete a medical exam and successfully pass POPAT (Police Officer’s Physical Ability Test) which involves running, pushups, and dragging a 175-pound mannequin.
  • Students must meet specific criminal background standards.
  • Student must successfully complete 868 hours of coursework which includes firearms, driving, control and compliance techniques, rapid deployment, and Haz-Mat.
