CFCC alum Brian Allen now principal of Burgaw Middle School

Brian Allen

Brian Allen, a CFCC alum and New Hanover County native, recently assumed the role of principal at Burgaw Middle School. Prior to his new position, he opened Surf City Elementary School where he served as the principal for the past five years.

Allen’s early exposure to the world of education and mentoring began through a unique avenue—his father’s involvement in initiating the swim program at UNCW. Hence, as a teenager, Brian found himself teaching swim lessons.

In this setting, Brian developed a passion for teaching.

“I would slide into the lane and watch the other instructors and then mimic what they were doing,” shared Allen. “For me, that experience working with young children was what ultimately spurred me to go into education.”

CHOOSING COMMUNITY COLLEGE

After graduating from Laney High School, Allen faced the decision to enlist in the military or continue his education at the local community college. Inspired by his passion for teaching, he opted for the latter and enrolled at Cape Fear Community College with plans to obtain a four-year degree.

Elementary Education

His passion for teaching young children took off after that as he pursued a career as an elementary school teacher. As an elementary school teacher, Allen recognized the need for positive male role models within public education. He then returned to UNCW to pursue his master’s degree in elementary education.

EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Currently, Allen is furthering his educational journey by pursuing his doctoral degree in Educational Leadership which includes a certificate in community college studies. His research focus lies in the history and profound impact of community colleges, a testament to his commitment to understanding and strengthening the educational institutions that play a pivotal role in many students’ lives.

“I appreciate the pivotal role that community colleges play in guiding individuals who are in the process of making important life decisions,” remarked Allen. “Currently, my research centers on the significance of CFCC in bolstering our local economy, as well as the commendable trend of our community members seamlessly transitioning from CFCC into the workforce.”

EMBRACING CHANGE AND INSPIRING GROWTH

Allen is embracing his transition from the elementary to the middle school level. He is excited about the new opportunities and challenges that lie ahead and looks forward to making a positive impact on his students’ educational journeys.
