CFCC Launches Innovative Live House Project to Build Workforce Skills

Wilmington, NC (June 1, 2026) – Cape Fear Community College is launching an exciting new Live House Project that will give students hands-on experience building residential homes from the ground up. In Fall 2026, CFCC students will begin construction on the first home as a part of a multi-semester project designed to mirror real-world residential construction timelines and industry standards. The college plans to build two to three homes at a time through this initiative.
The first home will be constructed at CFCC’s North Campus over four academic semesters – Fall 2026, Spring 2027, Summer 2027, and Fall 2027. The home will feature 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and total 1,325 square feet. It will be built to withstand winds up to 130 miles per hour. Upon completion, the home will be publicly auctioned.
“This project creates an unmatched learning environment for our students,” said Jim Morton, CFCC President. “Students will gain real-world experience working together across multiple disciplines while contributing to a project that directly serves our community.”
The Live House Project will involve students and faculty from numerous CFCC programs, including:
