CFCC Foundation Mourns the Loss of Betsy Leonard
On Sunday, July 10, the entire Cape Fear Community College family lost a legend. Elizabeth (Betsy) Edwards Leonard was integral to the college and its Foundation since 2005. She served on the CFCC Foundation Board of Directors as chair for many years, was a member of the McKeithan Society, and served as Foundation Board Emeritus upon her passing.
One of Betsy’s greatest passions was helping CFCC students – especially those with children. In 2008, she created the Holiday Helpers program to provide Christmas assistance to needy students and their children. This program has become a vital support system for Cape Fear Community College students with families. Since its inception, the CFCC Foundation has received 1,500 individual gifts to this program, totaling $245,106 – 100% of which has gone directly to students over the holidays.
Through Betsy’s tireless effort and commitment, Holiday Helpers has helped over 1,000 students. Last year alone, the CFCC Foundation provided financial assistance to 115 students. Every year, the need has grown, as Betsy’s friends and family have committed.
In honor of Betsy’s legacy, the CFCC Foundation has created the Betsy Leonard Holiday Helpers Endowment – a fund that will exist perpetually, allowing Betsy’s kind heart and love of helping families to live on forever. All gifts received in Betsy’s memory will be added to this fund. Many years from now, students will continue to receive the love and support that Betsy has given to students throughout her life.
