Building Inspector
Train for a career as a certified building inspector!
CFCC offers Building, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing Inspection courses designed to prepare students for careers in code enforcement and inspection. These courses are taught by NC Department of Insurance (NCDOI) certified instructors and satisfy the educational prerequisites required to sit for the corresponding North Carolina state certification exams.

- Level 1: Residential and commercial construction up to 20,000 square feet
- Level 2: Residential and commercial construction up to 60,000 square feet
- Level 3: Unlimited size construction and advanced inspections

These programs are ideal for individuals with construction or technical experience who are looking to transition into inspection and code enforcement careers. Successful completion of each course prepares students for the applicable NCDOI state exam.
Required Materials
Students only need the code book(s) specific to the course they are taking. We will not have any additional code books at class. Code books are required to follow along during the course and for the course and state exams.
- Mechanical Courses will also require the NC Fuel Gas Code
- Level 1 Building Course will require NC State Building Code and NC State Residential Building Code Books
- Level 1 Plumbing Course it is recommended to have access to the NC State Residential Building Code
Need an NCDOI Login?
All students registered for building, electrical, mechanical and/or plumbing inspection will need their Code Enforcement Officer (CEO) number on the first day of class.
If you do not have a CEO number, you can register for one by clicking “Create an Account.” Scroll down to the bottom of the page and lick “Create New CEO Login.”
Course Technical & Physical Requirements
- Students should be familiar with building codes prior to the course and have some construction/technical background.
- The course will spend hours sitting and looking up code, following lecture and instruction culminating in a comprehensive exam.
