CCP Pathway: Assistance Dog Training

Are you passionate about working with dogs and interested in preparing for future employment within the assistance dog or private sector pet training industry?

The Career and College Promise Assistance Dog Training Pathway is your perfect opportunity to turn your passion into a fulfilling career!

This pathway will prepare students who are passionate about working with dogs for future employment either within the Assistance Industry or within the private sector, pet-dog training.


New students can begin the program each Fall semester.

Students will take the following courses in order:

  1. Intro to Assistance Dogs (Open to the Public)
  2. Puppy Development (Pre-requisite: Intro to Assistance Dogs)
  3. Advanced Puppy Development (Selective Admissions)*
  4. Assistance Dog Task Training (Selective Admissions)
  5. Assistance Dog Client Training (Selective Admissions)

*In semester 3, students will be able to opt in to at-home hours with paws4people® puppies-in-training. To ensure animal safety and well-being, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Earn a satisfactory grade for Semester 2
  • Have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and valid auto insurance
  • Pass a criminal background check and drug screening
  • Pass the paws4people® Home Visit Checklist
  • If applicable, other canines in the home must pass the paws4people® Temperament Test

Class Schedule

New cohorts begin every fall. Classes meet one evening a week. Students only take 1 class at a time. Students will also be responsible for online work and fieldwork, which they schedule on their own time.


Program Location

Classes meet at our North Campus and paws4people . Fieldwork may take place at the paws4people facility and other public places. Delivery mode is subject to change.


THE CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION/WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY (CTE/WCEP)

Tuition-free course hours that lead to a technician education certificate, State, or Industry Recognized Credential aligned with a high school career cluster. Students are responsible for the following CFCC fees:

  • Parking & Security – $10.00/class
  • Technology Fee – $5.00/class

Students will be completing volunteer hours and fieldwork at paws4people as part of their coursework. These hours will vary by class and students will have the flexibility to schedule these hours on their own time. Students will also need to purchase a uniform for volunteer and fieldwork. Lastly, students may need an Amazon Prime account to view certain training videos. If students get to Class 3 and opt in to the at-home puppy training, they will need to assemble a puppy kit.


ELIGIBILITY & ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Be a high school junior or senior
  • Have an unweighted GPA of 2.8 on high school courses or your principal’s approval
  • If GPA is lower than 2.8, assessment testing is required

APPLICATION PROCESS

ELIGIBILITY FOR CONTINUED ENROLLMENT IN CCP (CTE/WCEP PATHWAY)

To maintain eligibility for continued enrollment, a student must:

  • Continue to make progress toward high school graduation.
  • Continue to make progress toward successful completion of the Workforce Continuing Education pathway as defined by the pathway syllabus.
  • A student who doesn’t meet these criteria will be subject to the college’s policy for unsatisfactory progress.
