Graduate Spotlight: Maria Mandujano
Originally from Mexico, Maria Mandujano is graduating from Cape Fear Community College’s Dental Hygiene program. Maria has demonstrated remarkable determination and a strong work ethic, despite the challenges of her busy schedule. As a wife and mom to a 10-year-old boy and commuting three hours daily to and from school, she has shown unwavering commitment to her studies. We are proud to recognize Maria and celebrate her accomplishments, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact she will make in the world of dental hygiene and beyond.
Why did you decide to enroll at CFCC? Why did it make sense for you?
CFCC has a variety of great outstanding programs, but most importantly, it offers the program I wanted to pursue, the dental field. CFCC was the nearest campus to my home, allowing me to attend school. I commute about three hours daily to and from school, but its value and rewarding experiences are worth it all.
Where are you from originally?
I am originally from Distrito Federal, Mexico. I grew up and currently live in Tabor City, NC, since 2002. I am a wife and a mom to a ten-year-old busy little boy.
Can you tell us about your experience at CFCC, including your major, any achievements, participation in student activities, etc.?
My experience at CFCC has been phenomenal! CFCC has been my home for at least the last four years. I am a past graduate of the Dental Assisting program class of 2021, where I graduated with many academic awards, a couple of scholarships, and as class president. A few weeks later, I entered the Dental Hygiene program.
My program’s faculty are amazing. They prepare you for the real world by expecting nothing but the best from the student. The student-to-instructor ratio is low, allowing more one-on-one time with the student. Overall, they genuinely care for you not only as a student but also as a person. The faculty respects values and perspectives and encourages diversity. I am a current Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Alpha Chi Sigma Chapter member. I have participated in student activities, such as PTK career events.
What are your plans after graduation?
I would love to apply everything I learned from my program and start implementing, educating, and treating my dental patients. I would love to pursue a bachelor’s degree in the next few years. But most importantly, I would love to take this time to enjoy and take in all achievements and accomplishments conquered.
What made you want to pursue that career path?
Honestly, not knowing anything about the dental world lit a spark and fire within me to seek, study, and pursue it. This career path will grant me the ability and flexibility to work and not miss home, which is important to my family.
How has CFCC helped prepare you for your next step?
CFCC’s dental assisting and dental hygiene programs have provided me with the necessary knowledge and skills to enter the dental field. The vigorous and challenging aspects of both curriculums gave me the discipline and knowledge to become the best person I can be, inside and outside the clinic.
What advice would you give someone considering studying at CFCC?
If I did it, you can most certainly achieve it! You only need to overcome your mind and set a foot forward to start your journey of success.
