Student Spotlight: Carson Zickert
Carson Zickert grew up in Chicago, Illinois, where he spent his summers learning about sailing and boats on the shores of Lake Michigan. At the age of 15, he acquired an aging vessel in desperate need of restoration. Mentored by a local boat builder, Carson took on the challenge of reviving the classic wooden boat, which sparked his passion for the industry.
Even before graduating high school, Carson knew he wanted to learn more about the boat-building industry. His research into boat-building programs led him to CFCC. In 2019, he toured the CFCC campus and knew this was the college for him.
“I found CFCC’s Wooden Boat Building program to be the perfect fit for me,” Carson commented. “I wanted to learn more about the importance of building unique boats and the very delicate skills that come with it.”
Quality Instruction
Carson enjoyed his time in the Wooden Boat Building program. He appreciates the instructors’ exceptional teaching abilities.
The program broadened his skill set significantly, exposing him to a diverse range of techniques and abilities that were previously unfamiliar to him. Carson is further expanding his horizons within the world of trades and boat building.
“It was exciting to receive my Wooden Boat Building diploma,” shared Carson. “Now, I am working towards my second diploma in the Boat Manufacture and Service program to learn about fiberglass boats.”
FROM LOFTING TO SOLD
His favorite experience to date is seeing his hard work pay off.
Carson’s school project, a 16-foot Mantinicus Peapod Sailboat, gained recognition when it was showcased at a boat show in Georgetown, SC. Subsequently, a local collector noticed the boat and extended an offer.
Seeing his boat purchased by an avid collector was a source of pride for Carson. He credits CFCC with the quality instruction that guided him to build an exceptional watercraft.
On Deck
Carson plans to seek employment in the Wilmington area, working in wooden boat restoration. One day, he plans to operate his own business and build a custom boat.
“I’d love to create my own business using the skills I learned from CFCC,” remarked Carson. “CFCC has given me the opportunity to find many jobs in the boat-building industry all across the state and the East Coast. CFCC helped me make connections with industry professionals.”
If you’re thinking about joining CFCC, Carson suggests picking a program you’re really into and sticking with it. Do what you love, make loads of friends, and make sure to be on time for classes.
