Plan Ahead:
Severe weather and other emergencies can happen anytime. It is important to plan ahead. For help planning, follow this link.
Be ready:
Students, make sure your cell phone number is correct in your Self Service profile. All students are automatically signed up for CFCC Alerts. This way, the College can notify you in the event of an emergency.
Stay informed:
In the event of a weather emergency, CFCC closely monitors conditions so we can make decisions about closings or delays. Any closing or delay will be announced via text message, on our website, and on our social media accounts. We also announce delays and closures through local news stations.
Active Shooter
Run
- Have an escape route and plan predetermined
- Leave your belongings behind
- Keep hands visible (for Police to see)
Hide
- Lock and barricade doors
- Turn off lights and silence cellphones
- Do not huddle together
- Stay low
- Avoid walls and corners
Fight
- Fighting is a last resort
- Fight like your life depends on it
- Attempt to incapacitate the threat/shooter
- Use anything that can be a weapon, fire extinguisher, chair, ……..
Inform – 911, Campus Security
- Your name
- Your exact location
- Location of the shooter (if known)
- Number of shooters, if more than one
- Detailed Description of the shooter(s)
- Number and type of weapons involved
- Number of potential victims with you
When law enforcement arrives:
- Remain calm and follow all officers’ instructions
- Raise your hands and keep them visible at all times
- Avoid making quick movements toward the officers
Alerts
CFCC Alerts delivers important alerts, notifications, and updates to you via email and text message. CFCC students can sign up update their preferences to include multiple phone numbers and email addresses.

- Remain calm.
- If the threat is received by telephone and you have caller ID, record the incoming phone number and conversation (if possible).
- If there is a threat on voicemail do not erase.
- Keep the caller on the phone as long as possible and gather all the information you can.
- Immediately report the threat to 911 and Campus Security.
- Look for (but do not move or touch) suspicious packages and note their location for authorities.
- Evacuation will be determined by Campus Security and or Police.
- Report the threat to Campus Security and or Police at the appropriate number below:
Building Evacuation
- Remain calm
- Move quickly and quietly to your evacuation zone ( click here to view maps )
- Staff and faculty are responsible for directing students and guests to the appropriate evacuation zone
- Do not use elevators when evacuating.
- Take the shortest route to an exit unless it is blocked by fire, debris or other hazards.
- Assist any individuals with disabilities during an evacuation.
- Do not re-enter the building until cleared to do so by proper authorities.
Disruptive or Distressed Individual
Disruptive behavior is behavior that interferes with students, faculty or staff and their access to appropriate educational or work environment. Examples may include the following:
- Yelling or screaming
- Persistent and unreasonable demands for time and attention
- Words or actions that intimidate or harass others
- Words or actions that cause another to fear for his or her personal safety
- Threats of physical assault
If you are not concerned for your immediate safety or that of others, you may contact one or more of the following for assistance:
Earthquake
- Evacuate the building if time permits
- Move to an open space, away from objects that may fall
- If you must remain inside move to a door frame, under a table or sit on the floor against an interior wall.
- Cover your head and eyes with your arms.
- Be prepared for aftershocks.
- Report the location of injured people to one of the numbers below:
Elevator Safety
- If stuck in an elevator, try to remain calm.
- If the elevator is stuck between floors, do not attempt to exit.
- Use the elevator emergency call button to alert officials of your location.
- If there is no answer or service, call one of the numbers below:
Emergency Phones
Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) has emergency blue light phones located throughout its campuses and centers.
What You Need to Know:
- Location: Strategically installed across CFCC campuses and centers, especially in parking lots, decks, and more secluded areas.
- Purpose: Provides a direct line to request emergency assistance.
How to Use:
- Press the large red button on the phone unit.
- Speak clearly into the speaker to communicate with the 911 Dispatch Center.
- The 911 Dispatch Center will alert local law enforcement of the emergency.
Important Reminders:
- If you are in immediate danger, call 911 without delay.
- For non-emergency situations, contact Campus Security directly.
- Security escorts are available upon request from Campus Security.
Campus Security Contact Information:
Fire
- Remain calm.
- Fire alarms may be activated manually at pull stations or automatically by sensors.
- Any person who sees smoke or fire in a building should immediately activate the fire alarm, call 911 and Campus Security.
- Do not use elevators when evacuating.
- Staff and faculty should direct students and guests out of the building at the closest, safe, unblocked exit.

- Make sure all individuals are out of your room/suite.
- Close doors as you evacuate.
- Assist any individuals with disabilities during an evacuation.
- Upon arrival at Evacuation Zone, confirm everyone is still with you.
- Immediately report missing persons and their last know location to Campus Security.
- Do not re-enter the building until cleared to do so by proper authorities.
- Call Security after evacuating at one of the numbers below:

In the event of a weather emergency, CFCC closely monitors conditions to make timely decisions regarding closings or delays. Any closures or delays will be communicated via the following channels:

Notify
- Call Security at one of the numbers below:
Assist
- If the injury/illness is serious or life-threatening, call 911 and campus Security
- Do not move the person unless necessary
- If trained, begin CPR and First Aid
- Do not leave the victim unattended
- Do not give the victim anything to eat or drink
Advise
- Security will direct emergency personnel to the location.
- Advise EMS of the circumstances of the injury or illness.
Reporting an Emergency or a Crime
- Call 911 and Campus Security:
- Try to remain calm
- Speak slowly and clearly
- Try to provide as much information possible to the dispatcher (clothes, shoes, height, weight, nationality, location, people involved, etc)
- Remain on the phone with the dispatcher
- Instruct someone to meet emergency personnel and escort them to the incident
Severe Weather/Tornado
In the event of a tornado or severe thunderstorm:
- Go to the lowest area possible in the building.
- Move to the center of the room or in a stairwell.
- Close doors upon leaving your room.
- Stay away from exterior windows, hanging objects or large, open rooms.
- Do not use elevators.
- Call Security at one of the numbers below and provide your location:
Shelter in Place
- Remain calm.
- Shelter in place is used when there are hazards outside a building, such as severe weather, chemical spills, or other emergencies.
- Stay inside the building until further directed by Campus Security.
- Stay away from windows, exterior doors, and areas that have large roof spans, such as gymnasiums.
- Remain sheltered until cleared to do so by proper authorities.
