CFCC’s Music Scene Helps Miles Moore Grow

CFCC’s open mic events bring together students from different backgrounds and introduce us to new talent on campus. This fall, one of those performers was Miles Moore, a high school student in the Career and College Promise program who brought his electric guitar to the stage.

Miles moved to Wilmington from San Diego six years ago and continued homeschooling after the move. Starting college early was always on his radar, and this fall he enrolled in his first three classes. “I wanted to ease into it,” he said. “It hasn’t been stressful at all. I’m loving it.”

Around the same time he arrived in Wilmington, Miles picked up the guitar. “I always loved music, and I always thought guitars looked so cool,” he said. He gravitated toward the blues and still sees it as the foundation of his playing.

Teaching Through Music

This semester, CFCC has helped him lean deeper into that side of himself. Two of his instructors are musicians: music instructor and saxophonist Benny Hill, and English instructor and drummer, Dr. Hrebik, known to his students as Dr. J.

Learning from faculty who perform has been a turning point. “I’ve met so many musicians here who inspire me and push me,” Miles said.

Dr. J’s English class has been especially influential. The course takes a music-centered approach, and students recently attended a concert by the Robert Cray Band at the Wilson Center. “Robert Cray was already familiar to me because of the blues,” Miles said. “Seeing him live was incredible.”

The class is now working on a film rescoring project using scenes from The Truman Show.
“It’s been a really cool way to learn what music does for a story,” he said.

“I’m in an environment that really corresponds well with my passions. It’s a great place to be for music,” Miles shared.
