Non-Degree Seeking and Visiting Students
Are you enrolled in another college/university, and plan to take courses at CFCC to transfer back to your primary school? If yes, you are considered a visiting student.

Important Note
Many classes have prerequisites. Please see Step 3 or the FAQs for details regarding transcript submission and eligibility.
STEP 1 | Ensure Residency is current
Check your Residency Determination Services (RDS) account to ensure your status is up-to-date and won’t expire before the semester begins.
- Note your Residency Certification Number (RCN) for your application.
- If expired, complete a re-consideration/update.

STEP 2 | Submit Application
Ready to apply? Selecting the correct program of study is critical to speeding up your enrollment process:
- Select “Special Credit” / “Non-degree seeking” as your major.
- The application is free and can be saved to finish later.
- Allow time for your application to be processed once submitted.
- Once your application has been processed you will receive your acceptance email. This will contain directions to create your student portal account. Once an account is created, you will be able to access Self Service and additional registration forms.
STEP 3 | Submit Transcripts
If your desired course has a prerequisite, you must demonstrate eligibility through transcripts:
If the class you wish to take has a prerequisite
- Submit an official transcript from the school where you completed the prerequisite.
- When you order your transcript, select Cape Fear Community College, or transcripts@cfcc.edu as the recipient.
- For paper copies, please send to: Cape Fear Community College – ATTN: Registrar’s Office/Transcripts – 411 N Front Street – Wilmington, NC 28401
- Once you submit your official transcript(s), it will go through the evaluation process. You will be sent an email to your CFCC email address from the Registrar’s Office, outlining what courses have successfully transferred to CFCC.
- When you order your transcript, select Cape Fear Community College, or transcripts@cfcc.edu as the recipient.
- An unweighted high school GPA of 2.8 or higher will fulfill ENG-025, MAT-025, and MAT-035 prerequisites. Visit the high school transcript request guide for information on how to send your high school transcript to CFCC.
- CFCC also accepts AP exam scores, CLEP exam scores, and official foreign language placement tests scores from any UNC System university. Please see the CFCC Catalog for minimum score and course equivalencies for AP and CLEP exams.
If you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite course(s) at another college
- Complete the REG-Conditional Registration Acceptance form in SoftDocs, attaching your unofficial transcript to be able to register in the course. Once your final grade is released, an official copy of your transcript must be sent to CFCC to maintain enrollment in the course. Final grade for the prerequisite class must be a C or higher.

STEP 4 | Register for Class
Once admitted, use one of the options below to secure your seat in your chosen courses:
- Self-register for classes in the Self Service course registration portal.
- Watch the “ How to Register ” video tutorial for guidance.
- Meet with an Academic Advisor . Join the waitlist or schedule an appointment using the QLess scheduling system.

What is a non-degree seeking student?
“Non-degree Seeking” is a student or visiting student who is not working towards a degree at CFCC, and is only taking one or a few courses here.
What major should I choose in the application?
Choose “Special Credit” for your Program of Study (Major) on the application.
How do I find the CFCC class that is equivalent to the class from my college/university?
CFCC does not assume responsibility in determining a student’s course selection when the credits are to be transferred elsewhere. Students are encouraged to work with their home institution to ensure credits completed at CFCC are transferable.
How do I know if /what Prerequisites are needed for the CFCC Class I need to take?
All currently offered courses are available on CFCC Class Finder Tool . Once you have determined which class you would like to take, click on it to pull up the course description and look for the necessary prerequisites.
How do I submit my Official Transcript from my College/University?
You will need to follow the transcript request procedure of the college/university where you took the course. Many will offer online transcript ordering, which is the quickest way for your transcript to be received, although we do also accept paper copies of transcripts. When you order your transcript, select Cape Fear Community College, or transcripts@cfcc.edu as the recipient.
How do I update my Residency?
All students are required to have a valid Residency Status prior to registration. Visit the North Carolina Residency Determination Service website to update your residency. RDS determines whether you will pay in-state or out-of-state tuition. If you have issues, call RDS: 844-319-3640 or rdsinfo@ncresidency.org Make sure to keep a copy of your Residency Certification Number for your CFCC application.
How do I send my class credit from CFCC back to my College/University?
You can send an official copy of your CFCC transcript to your home institution through the Transcript Request website after your grades have been posted.
Can I use Financial Aid to pay for classes?
The special credit program is not eligible for financial aid, however students can register for a payment plan to break up expenses into affordable scheduled payments without interest. Please view payment plan details for information about enrollment and payment dates for the upcoming semester.
Do you have an F1 Visa with another institution?
Visiting students who have an F1 Visa must follow the International Student Admissions process .
