Alumni Spotlight: Phili Vizzini
Phil Vizzini, CFCC alumnus and award-winning photographer, was named Cape Fear Living’s Life on Water category winner in 2024 and Photographer of the Year in 2022. His stunning aerial shots capture Wilmington’s coastal landscapes and beyond.
From Oceanography to the Coast Guard
After graduating from UNCW with a degree in physical geography and a minor in oceanography, Phil faced the challenge many recent graduates know too well – finding the right career path.
“I couldn’t really find anything I wanted to do,” Phil recalls.
That’s when he decided to enlist in the Coast Guard, where he spent the next four and a half years stationed at Oak Island. He worked in search and rescue, law enforcement, and port security there.
Discovering Marine Technology at CFCC
After his Coast Guard service, Phil’s bond with the ocean only deepened. He enrolled in Cape Fear Community College’s Marine Technology program.
“I was blown away by how much students were involved and the equipment we got to work with,” he shares. “The hands-on experience was amazing. We were out on the water every week learning something new.”
Following graduation, Phil accepted a position at McKim & Creed, a respected engineering and surveying firm. His work took him along the East Coast, where he conducted hydrographic surveys and participated in beach renourishment projects.
“Everything I learned at CFCC directly applied to my work at McKim & Creed,” Phil explains.
Turning to Photography
Despite his success in marine surveying, Phil felt a strong pull toward photography. His passion for photography had always been present, inspired by his mother, a professional wedding photographer. But it wasn’t until after his time in the Coast Guard and his training at CFCC that Phil realized it could be more than a hobby. “You go through different seasons in your life and see what works,” he shares.
Phil’s work on the water has given him a unique perspective on capturing the beauty of the coast. His experiences at UNCW, CFCC, and the Coast Guard have all contributed to his success in aerial photography. “I use my drone to capture the best of both worlds — my love for the water and photography,” he explains.
