This Women in Construction Week, we’re celebrating three incredible Cape Fear Community College alumnae who have taken different paths within the construction industry.

From CFCC to Monteith Construction

Maria Torres and sisters Alana dos Santos and Julliane De Souza graduated from CFCC’s Construction Management program and now work at Monteith Construction in different roles.

Alana is a project manager overseeing multimillion-dollar projects, Maria is a superintendent in Monteith’s Charleston office, and Julliane, whom we spoke with, specializes in Virtual Design and Construction (VDC).

Finding the Right Fit

Julliane didn’t initially see herself in construction, but her sister, Alana, encouraged her to explore the field. “At first, I didn’t think I’d like it,” Julliane recalled. But after exploring the field, she saw the possibilities.

“I did some research, watched some videos, and realized there was so much you could do with this degree – scheduling, estimating, VDC, project management, even accounting. I decided to give it a shot, and now I’m doing what I thought I wouldn’t like, and I love it.”

Bringing Projects to Life

“I do pre-construction and during-construction renderings. If we want to win a job, I can make that rendering happen so they can go to the interview with something to show. And when construction is happening, I can show the owners how the building will look after the finishes.”

Encouraging the Next Generation

Julliane encourages others to explore construction management as a rewarding and dynamic career that offers both financial stability and personal growth.

“You can start making money right away, and from there, you just keep growing. Anyone who takes this path won’t regret it. It opens so many doors.”

Julliane, Alana, and Maria are proof that construction management offers an array of exciting opportunities. As we celebrate Women in Construction Week, we’re proud to recognize their hard work, achievements, and the doors they’re helping open for future graduates.
