CFCC exercise science student receives Academic Excellence Award

As part of our ongoing effort to showcase the exceptional achievements of our students, we’re proud to introduce our latest CFCC standout: Nicole Davis.

Nicole, a Health & Fitness Science major, has been selected to receive the 2023 Academic Excellence Award from the North Carolina Community College System.

This prestigious award recognizes students who have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and completed at least 12 semester hours in an associate degree program or at least six hours of coursework toward a one-year certificate.

“When Nicole began her coursework in the Health and Fitness Science Program she stood out immediately as a mature, conscientious, and academically dedicated student. She has proven evidence of leadership, integrity, and intellectual excellence. Nicole demonstrates an ongoing pursuit of fitness ideals and goals by working as a NASM Certified Personal Trainer. She is an incredible role model for other HFS students and they look to her as a valued and trusted mentor and peer. The Health and Fitness Science Program is fortunate to have Nicole and her high level of academic standards. We cannot wait to see what the future has in store for her academically as well as in the fitness industry.”

We sat down with Nicole to learn more about her academic journey, her experiences at CFCC, and her plans for the future. Join us as we get to know one of our highly accomplished students.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ENROLL AT CFCC? WHY DID IT MAKE SENSE FOR YOU?

I decided to enroll at CFCC because I wanted to make a career change. I have always had a passion for helping people and enjoy fitness, so it made sense for me to enroll and become a part of the Health and Fitness Science – Exercise Science program.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM ORIGINALLY?

I am originally from Asheboro, North Carolina.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AT CFCC, INCLUDING YOUR MAJOR, ANY ACHIEVEMENTS, PARTICIPATION IN STUDENT ACTIVITIES, ETC.

My major at CFCC is Health and Fitness Science – Exercise Science. Some of my achievements during my time at CFCC include being on the Dean’s List and the President’s List. I am a member of the Health and Fitness Science club.

I have also been selected to receive the Academic Excellence Award at CFCC. I am so thankful for my instructors, who believed in me from the start and continue to push me to be the best.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER GRADUATION?

After I graduate from CFCC, I will continue my education at UNCW, where I will obtain my bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO PURSUE THAT CAREER PATH/ATTEND THAT FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY?

My passion for fitness and helping people made me want to pursue this career path. I love the Wilmington area and what UNCW has to offer.

HOW HAS CFCC HELPED PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR NEXT STEP?

CFCC has helped me prepare for my next step in many ways. I have been given great opportunities to learn in and out of the classroom. I have also been provided with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as a personal trainer.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE CONSIDERING STUDYING AT CFCC?

I would tell them to go for it. Don’t doubt yourself; push yourself. CFCC has great programs and faculty members that will help you succeed because they want the best for you.
