Graduate Spotlight: Zyran Joy

Zyran Joy is his cap and gown

Born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina, Zyran Joy will graduate with his Associate in Science in May. Choosing CFCC as a stepping stone, Zyran’s sights are set on NC State or Howard University with plans to become a biomedical engineer.

“It’s not a matter of if,” says Zyran. “It’s a matter of when.”

Zyran’s inspiration stems from witnessing the struggles of family members with heart-related issues, including two who rely on pacemakers. He wears a heart around his neck as a constant reminder of his purpose. As he prepares to graduate in a few short weeks, Zyran reflects on his time at CFCC.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ENROLL AT CFCC? WHY DID IT MAKE SENSE TO YOU?

I decided to enroll at CFCC because I wasn’t certain about a path at a four-year school, and I wanted time to think while keeping costs low, and CFCC checked both boxes.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AT CFCC?

My experience at CFCC has been amazing, and it has only gotten better as time has passed. I’ve immersed myself in a few clubs here on campus and met wonderful people. My only pain point is that I didn’t spend more time on campus; I now know I flourish in a face-to-face setting. I’ve recently become more involved on campus and spending more time here.

DID YOU HAVE A FAVORITE CLASS OR INSTRUCTOR?

My favorite instructor is Caroline Hudson. She was the first real instructor that made me feel welcome, and she made me feel like I was a pupil that could flourish here on campus. Her course, French II, was incredible and did nothing but increase my appreciation for French.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE CONSIDERING STUDYING AT CFCC?

I advise someone starting at CFCC to join a club and make connections. Utilize your instructors; they are wonderful resources. Research your classes to understand what type of class would benefit you more. Pay attention to your deadlines, check your email daily, and explore the campus. Some people never see what CFCC offers because they don’t explore!

ANY FINAL COMMENTS?

I loved my time at CFCC, and if I had the chance to do it all again, I would explore more and become more involved on campus. CFCC has really shown me what a community college can be, and I’m so thrilled to have experienced such a wonderful academic institution.
