Holly Cook Excels in CFCC’s Information Technology Program
Holly Cook found her perfect fit in Cape Fear Community College’s Information Technology program. This spring, she’s graduating with an Associate in Applied Science in Information Technology, a Diploma in Software Development, and an Associate in General Education while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
Originally from Catawba, North Carolina, Holly has lived in Wilmington since 2009. Like many students, she began at CFCC by exploring different programs before finding her passion for IT.
“I’ve always been interested in computers and technology, so I thought the Information Technology program would be a great fit. When I started the program in 2023, I wasn’t sure what area I would want to specialize in, but I quickly found that I really enjoyed coding.”
That curiosity and drive didn’t go unnoticed, and Holly was recognized at CFCC’s annual 2025 Student Recognition Ceremony.
“Holly Cook is an intelligent, sociable student driven by a strong desire to learn,” said Trisa Russell, Program Director of Information Technology. “She actively pursues knowledge beyond her coursework and was selected as our Work Study student because she independently chooses to assist classmates. She frequently offers guidance, shares resources, and helps peers understand difficult concepts. Her generosity and drive positively impact both students and faculty.”
Holly embraced the challenges and fast-paced nature of the IT field.
“IT is constantly changing. Even now, the program is updating to include classes on AI,” said Holly. “You have to learn to be flexible and always ready to learn new skills because some of what we know today could be obsolete in a few years.”
Holly especially valued the hands-on approach CFCC takes to learning.
“Most assignments are hands-on, giving us real skills and experience that we can apply to a career later.”
One standout moment for Holly was her final project in Mr. Davison’s Python programming class.
“We built a GUI that worked like a database management system for a bookstore,” she said. “I loved loading the program, clicking the buttons and menus I coded, and seeing everything working together.”
Holly is pursuing a Google certification in Data Analytics and preparing for a career as a data analyst. She credits her time at CFCC for helping her build real-world skills and confidence.
Holly has some advice for future IT students. “Take advantage of the Learning Lab and tutoring. It’s a tough field, but with support and persistence, you’ll succeed. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and keep practicing.”
