Learning a New Language and Earning Her Diploma: Maricarmen’s Story

Originally from Mexico, Maricarmen is doing something new at Cape Fear Community College. She is currently enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) and online Adult High School (AHS) courses, a combination that hasn’t traditionally been offered at CFCC.

“Before, students would take ESL classes first and then move into AHS,” explains Aja Winstead, Adult High School and High School Equivalency program coordinator. “But through my experience as a virtual administrator, I saw how we could use online learning platforms that translate course content into a student’s native language. That opened the door for us to try something different.”

And it’s working.

“For me, taking online classes is actually pretty easy,” Maricarmen says. “I went to a school that used online learning before, so I was already used to it.”

By pairing her AHS course online with in-person ESL instruction, Winstead and the rest of the Academic and Career Readiness team have created a pathway that allows Maricarmen to work toward her diploma while learning English at the same time.

“What’s helped me the most is how understanding everyone at CFCC has been,” Maricarmen shares. “They’ve always tried to find ways to help me understand, and I’m so thankful for that.”

She credits CFCC faculty and staff for creating a safe and encouraging environment. “Lawan Corbett and Aja Winstead are always kind and make me feel comfortable. They never make me feel bad if I don’t understand something.”

Maricarmen attends ESL classes twice a week at CFCC’s Burgaw Center and is making great progress in her AHS course. Winstead stays in close communication with her through the TalkingPoints app to offer support.

“Our goal is to remove barriers for students,” Winstead says. “In Maricarmen’s case, we’ve taken meaningful steps to do just that. I hope she will soon be able to attend an AHS class in person, but until then, she has the opportunity and support to keep moving forward.”

For Maricarmen, the most rewarding part is finally accomplishing what she’s wanted to do for so long.

“I’m learning a new language and getting closer to graduating. I’ve always wanted to finish high school and go on to study for a career.”

Her advice to others?

“Don’t be afraid or ashamed to take these classes. The teachers are kind and understanding. No one will laugh at you if you don’t say something right or don’t understand right away. If you get the chance to take these classes, do it. You won’t regret it.”
