Biography

Known as Frau Shin among her students, Yuna Shin grew up on three different continents and speaks three languages fluently. The three cultures in which she grew up, Korean, German, and American, helped shape her worldview. Ms. Shin studied English and German as an undergraduate at the University of California at Irvine, from which she graduated with honors and Phi Beta Kappa in both majors.

She then pursued graduate study in German Literature at Princeton University, focusing on critical theory, feminist literary theory, and the psychoanalytic approach to literature. While a student at Princeton, she also traveled for a year to the University of Chicago as a CIC-Scholar where she studied under Professors Sander Gilman and Eric Santner.She also enrolled at the Universität Hamburg for a year to conduct guided research under Dr. Prof. Marianne Schuller. After receiving her MA and spending additional years on graduate work at Princeton, Ms. Shin received an M.L.I.S. degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with an emphasis on the management of academic libraries, particularly the management of manuscripts and rare books.

Since starting at CFCC full-time in 2012, Ms. Shin has focused on language pedagogy and language acquisition. She is also known for using German songs and videos in her classes. In addition to all levels of German classes, she also teaches Critical Thinking and Human Values & Meaning classes, utilizing her education and knowledge in the broader field of Humanities.

She was nominated 4 times for the Marilyn Anderson Goodman Excellence in Teaching Award and was the winner of the Award in 2021. She has also advised the CFCC Feminist Alliance since 2014 and helped students gain experience organizing and hosting events. She has also been a guest speaker and panelist at discussions and events at CFCC and UNCW. Ms. Shin is also actively engaged in the local community and works with many organizations such as NAACP, Working Films, and the YWCA. In addition, she serves as one of the organizers for the annual Out of Darkness Community Walks event on behalf of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in honor of a former student, Hunter Cooper, who will always hold a special place in her heart.
