Defensive Driving

CFCC offers five courses designed to help you learn safe driving techniques so you can avoid citations and accidents.

Alive @ 25 (for ages 16-25)
This course is for young drivers age 16-25, who incur traffic violations. Through interactive media segments, workbook exercises, role playing, and classroom participation, young drivers develop strategies that will keep them safe on the road.

Information for students and/or attorneys

If you are registering for Alive at 25 or Defensive Driving 4 or 8 hour at the request of the court for Pender and New Hanover County, you must provide the following:

  • Driver’s license number
  • Court case number
  • If applicable, a money order/cashier’s check payable to Clerk of Court for court costs brought to class.

For all other counties, please provide the following:

Defensive Driving – 4 hour
This course will motivate drivers to change their behind-the-wheel behaviors and attitudes. It will give them key understanding, skills, and techniques to avoid collisions and reduce future violations. The result is a more responsible driver who grasps best practices to prevent injury and death while operating a motor vehicle. This class is open to any individual or business wanting to increase their awareness of roadway safety.

Defensive Driving – 8 hour
This course is used extensively for court referrals, as a diversion program for drivers with excessive violations, and to retrain drivers with poor driving records. This course addresses the attitudes of drivers so participants can see that their choices have financial, legal, and personal consequences.

For all other counties, please provide the following:

Remedial Driver Training – 12 Hour
This course is used extensively for court referrals as a specialized training program for drivers whose actions demonstrate a wanton disregard for the safety of others. The course consists of 8 hours of National Safety Council “chronic offender” material as well as 4 hours of customized NC training, including teaching laws and safe driving principles from the NC DMV Driver Handbook. Students will work with each other to talk about their current driving behaviors, discuss potential consequences of that behavior and identify alternative behaviors they can choose when driving. Students will make a personal commitment to safe and legal driving.

Basic Motorcycle Rider
CFCC North Campus
Saturdays and/or Sundays 8am-6pm (18 hr)

Whether you are a new rider who has never ridden a motorcycle before or you are an old pro who needs a refresher, this is the course for you! Students will learn about the different types of motorcycles and the layout and operation of the basic controls. This course combines classroom and on-bike experience so students will learn how to become safer, more responsible riders. The MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) Basic eCourse is a required online component and must be completed within 30 days prior to starting the Basic Motorcycle Rider Course. Login information and coupon codes will be provided after registration.

Motorcycles are provided and students will be assigned to a bike based on size and seat height.

Prerequisites
  • Students must be able to balance and ride a bicycle
  • Students must be 16 years of age or older. It is not necessary to possess a driver’s license to take the course.
  • Students under the age of 18 must have the written consent of a parent or guardian. This written consent is granted on the waiver form completed by each student at the beginning of the course.
  • MSF Basic eCourse is a required online component and must be completed no more than 30 days prior to the Motorcycle Rider Course at CFCC. Students are emailed login information and coupon codes after registration. There is no fee with a valid coupon code.
  • The MSF Basic eCourse Certificate of Completion is valid for 30 days and must be presented to the instructor on the first day of class, prior to class start. Without a certificate, students will not be able to take the class and no refunds or transfers will be given.
Required Attire
  • DOT-approved helmet
  • Over the ankle leather footwear (no tennis shoes)
  • Long pants and long sleeved shirt or jacket
  • Full fingered gloves
  • Protective eyewear (glasses, sunglasses, goggles, face shield
  • Rain gear (class is held rain or shine)
Licensing

Anyone operating a motorcycle on a public roadway must hold a North Carolina driver’s license and motorcycle endorsement (M). To receive a motorcycle endorsement you must successfully complete a written knowledge test and a skill test.

The NC DMV waives its skill test for motorcycle endorsement applicants who have successfully completed a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course. Graduates of the Basic Rider Course will be awarded a skills waiver card that must be submitted to the NC DMV license examiner as proof of course completion. This card is valid for one year from the date of issue.

Refund and Transfer Policy
A 100% refund will be given only if a written or emailed refund request form is received by the Defensive Driving Department prior to the course start date or if the course is canceled by the college.

A transfer into another class may be granted if the Defensive Driving Department is notified at 910-362-7175 or 910-362-7219 prior to the start of class.
