Chemical Technology Student Lands Job at Quality Chemical Laboratories

Ashley Wells

If only being a professional student was a good-paying gig, then Wilmington native Ashley Wells would keep on studying at CFCC. However, she has discovered that her studies at CFCC have landed her a sweet, career-choice job right before graduation! After working in the Quality Chemical Laboratories (QCL) internship program at CFCC, Ashley applied for a position at QCL. She was offered the job within 24 hours. Way to go, Ashley!

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE CFCC?

A friend of mine who was a pharmacy tech at CVS said I should check out the Chemical Technology program. It sounded good to me, so I enrolled in the program, and I think it was a really good decision.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AT CFCC?

Tracy Holbrook is incredible. He’s always making sure that things are going well for us. If we need any help, he’s a phone call or an email away. I’d only ever taken chemistry in high school, so I’ve learned so much more just in the first semester than I ever thought I would. Mr. Holbrook has a way of explaining things that breaks them down and helps you understand.

Working with Jerry Roberts, the Quality Chemical Lab (QCL) liaison lead trainer here on campus in the internship program has been a great way to get hands-on experience. Mr. Roberts has decades’ worth of experience in chemical technology. His training has taught us how to be more comfortable with the software and the instrument itself, as well as preparing samples.

DID YOU HAVE A FAVORITE CLASS?

Last semester I think one of the coolest classes we had was a forensics class, so we did all kinds of cool stuff. One of my favorite things we did was gel electrophoresis. That’s a method for separating fragments of DNA. You insert different samples into a well filled with gel, apply some electricity to it, and you start to see things separate.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO’S CONSIDERING STUDYING AT CFCC?

Definitely go for it. The instructors have been so helpful not only in the classroom but after graduation as well. They’re all here to help you, and they want to see you succeed. CFCC is a much more affordable option. It is well worth the investment.
