CFCC honors Black History Month with a series of February events
February 1 marks the beginning of Black History Month, a month dedicated to honoring the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape our nation.
Throughout February, Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) is excited to offer several events for community members and CFCC students, faculty, and staff to have the opportunity to learn about and hear from local Black leaders and history, discover Black-owned businesses and artists, and celebrate Black excellence through free events.

Community Conversations: What it Means to Belong: The Experiences of Students of Color at CFCC

This event will feature a panel of four current CFCC students who share their life experiences. The goal is for faculty and staff to engage with these students and explore new pathways to support students of color.

Documentary Screening of C.F. Pope: Where Champions Were Grown
Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023, at 11 a.m.

“C.F. Pope: Where Champions Were Grown” (2022) is a story about the C.F. Pope School in Burgaw. C.F. Pope School was founded in 1891 by the Middle District Missionary Baptist Association and began as a school for ministers. The school was accredited in 1924 and became one of only two high schools for African Americans in Pender County.
This documentary screening is free to attend and will feature a Q&A with Dr. Richard Newkirk, a renowned C.F. Pope alumni, immediately following the screening.
This event is free and open to the public.

Converting Conversations to Contracts Business Showcase & Networking Event presented by Genesis Block
Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023, from 9 to 11 a.m.
McKeithan Center Lobby and BB&T Auditorium
Genesis Block teamed up with the Carolina Small Business Development Fund (CSBDF) to host this trade show-style fair to showcase diverse-owned businesses, potential trade partners, diversity leaders in supply, and financial partners to build meaningful relationships within the Wilmington community.
This is an excellent opportunity for Cape Fear students and local businesses to network.
This event will also host a panel conversation on “Capital Access and Opportunities in High Growth Industries.”

Motivational Monday Speaker Series: Pastor Robert L Cambell

This month’s Nixon Leaders Center “Motivational Monday” speaker is Pastor Robert L. Campbell of New Beginning Christian Church, who will be speaking on the topic “Developing a Millionaire Mindset.”
Bio: Pastor Campbell is a retired United States Marine Corps veteran. He is a community leader with a B.S. in Business Administration M.S. in Business Management; he currently serves as the President of the Wilmington Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, Chairman of the Board of East Carolina Community Development Incorporation, a non-profit that builds affordable housing, and an Advisory Board Member of BB&T Bank, Wilmington. Pastor Campbell is blessed to be married to his wife, Kathy, for 31 years, and they have four children; Leah, Tiffany, Kyle, and Brent.

More Than A Shoe: The Impact of Sneakers in the Black Community

Black History Month Celebration Basketball Games
Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, at 1 p.m.

3 p.m. Cape Fear Men’s Basketball vs. Spartanburg Methodist
Join Sea Devils Athletics in culminating Black History Month with an afternoon of family-friendly fun and celebration. The doubleheader will feature the singing of the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Art students from Wilmington Girls Academy, GLOW, will showcase Black History Month-themed artwork throughout the day in the Schwartz Center lobby.
The Southeast Chapter of the National Black Leadership Caucus will be in attendance to meet with CFCC Nixon Center Leaders.
Heavenly Treats, a CFCC alumni-owned cupcake shop, will be selling baked goods during both games.
This event is open to the public.
**Admission to CFCC basketball games is $7 at the door. Cash and card are accepted. accepted. Individuals attending the women’s basketball game are also permitted to attend the men’s game at no additional charge.
