Graduate Spotlight: Awanna Evans-Moore
The decision to return to school can be daunting, especially for adult learners with many responsibilities outside of the classroom. Awanna Evans-Moore is one example of an adult learner and a mom of three children who decided to finish her degree and change careers. Her decision was driven by a desire to be more available to her family and provide them with a better life.
Awanna’s decision to return to school has been well worth the challenges. CFCC helped her move forward and prepared her for the next phase in her educational journey – pursuing her bachelor’s degree. We had the chance to sit down with Awanna and ask about her experience at CFCC. Here’s what she had to say.
Where are you from originally?
I am from Bolivia, NC, about thirty minutes from Wilmington, NC.
Why did you decide to enroll at CFCC? Why did it make sense to you?
I wanted to finish a goal I started over ten years ago, to be more available to my family. To lead by example for my three children, aged 3,4, and 11. Cape Fear was cost-efficient and had convenient ways to take classes that worked with my schedule. Being a mom of three can be hectic.
Can you tell us about your experience at CFCC?
I started at Cape Fear ten years ago. In 2011, I got married and had my oldest son. Eventually, life became overwhelming, so I dropped out. Providing for my son was more important than school to me at the time. During my absence from Cape Fear, I became a store manager and poured my life into that. Although I made a decent income, I no longer wanted to work 60+ hours a week, missing milestones from my son’s life. In 2018 I got remarried to Clarkton, and he encouraged me to finish what I started to pursue an associate degree. I am confident that I will be able to be there for the many milestones my three children will have because I don’t have to pour as much into a 9-5 because education and experience will allow me to be ahead.
Did you have a favorite class?
My favorite class was Humanities, with Ms. Beth Ferguson. She is such an awesome instructor. She is reliable, understanding, and fair.
I also enjoyed being a student ambassador as well as a work-study student. Those roles allowed me to meet different people and learn so much about Cape Fear. I have gained experience and knowledge to use for a lifetime. I have also met some amazing people.
What are your plans after graduation?
I have been accepted into Fayetteville State University, where I will continue my education. I will study for my bachelor’s in business administration, with a concentration in human resources.
What advice would you give someone considering studying at CFCC or taking courses online?
The staff at CFCC provides a lot of support to ensure that all students succeed during their time here. No matter what the needs may be.
Any final comments?
Matthew 19:26- With men, this is impossible; but with God, all things are possible.
