Alumni Spotlight: Anna Astarita

Anna Astarita

Meet Anna Astarita, a Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) alum who transitioned from a career in cosmetology to becoming a pre-construction specialist with Coleman Fine Homes. Anna’s story is one of adaptability, resilience, and a passion for design.

Originally from New York, Anna moved to Wilmington, NC, with her family. After graduating high school and earning a cosmetology degree, Anna switched careers upon relocating. Helping decorate her parents’ new home sparked her interest in interior design.

“I took a tour of the design program at Cape Fear and just immediately fell in love with it.”

Finding Cape Fear Community College

In 2019, Anna enrolled in the design program at CFCC, drawn by the program’s comprehensive curriculum and proximity to home. She appreciated the supportive environment and guidance from instructors like Tammy Powell and Beth Hood, who explained the courses and expectations in detail.

Navigating Challenges During COVID-19

The design program was challenging, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when several semesters were remote. Despite these obstacles, Anna found the experience rewarding. The program instilled vital skills such as time management, digital proficiency, and self-sufficiency.

“The nice thing about the design program is it’s a small group, so you get very close with each other. A lot of the girls, we still keep in touch.”

One highlight was the final commercial design project, where Anna created a comprehensive plan for a juice bar, from layout to materials selection, which was kept as an example for future students.

“I could have easily handed this project to a builder and an engineer, and they would have been ready to go, with the exception of a few things. But it was a project in its entirety. And I think that was really cool to have us do.”

Transitioning to the Workforce

After graduating in May 2021, Anna secured an internship with Logan Homes, which transitioned into a full-time designer position. Although Logan Homes later restructured, Anna found a new opportunity at Coleman Fine Homes, where she currently handles architectural reviews and permitting processes.

Reflecting on the Cape Fear Experience

Anna acknowledges that the design program at CFCC was crucial in preparing her for the workforce. The practical knowledge and confidence gained during the program have been invaluable in her role, which involves reviewing building plans, applying for permits, and ensuring compliance with neighborhood guidelines.

Embracing Future Opportunities

Looking to the future, Anna is open to various roles within the company, always aiming to contribute to the team’s success. She is enthusiastic about networking and promoting CFCC, interior design, and her current company.

Advice for Future Students

As Anna continues to thrive in her career, she remains grateful for the education and experiences at CFCC that paved the way for her professional journey. Her story highlights the importance of embracing new opportunities and the impact of a solid educational foundation.

For those considering a career change or further education, Anna’s advice is straightforward: explore new fields and leverage the resources and support systems available, just as she did at Cape Fear Community College.
