Alumni Spotlight: Holly Conwell, CPhT

Originally from Roanoke Rapids, NC, Holly Conwell moved to Wilmington to pursue her education and career goals. She graduated from CFCC’s Pharmacy Technology program this past May and has already secured a position at Novant Health Pharmacy .

What made you decide to enroll at Cape Fear Community College?

I chose Cape Fear because I wanted the college experience of moving to a new city without attending university. I also decided on Cape Fear because of their health science programs’ accreditations and pass rates.

Can you share your experience in the Pharmacy Technology program at CFCC?

In the program, I learned so much about how a pharmacy operates and how much goes into each prescription. I also learned how hospitals really depend on pharmacy techs and pharmacists to deliver medications to patients. During my time in the program, I worked in six different pharmacies and met many technicians who graduated from the program. The program also offered me many opportunities. My favorite part was the lab’s compounding medications and going to clinical.

Are you currently working?

Since I graduated, I have been working at a Novant Health Pharmacy.

Has the Pharmacy Technology program prepared you for your career in the field?

The program really prepared me for the workforce by providing knowledge about different types of medications and how medications work in your body. Attending clinical sites prepared me for patient interactions and communicating with providers and pharmacists.

What advice would you give someone considering studying Pharmacy Technology at CFCC?

My advice would be to have an open mind. During the program, you learn about so many different types of pharmacies. Some might interest you more than others. There are so many different positions in pharmacy that a technician can do. Lastly, have fun and soak up everything you learn and experience during the program!
