CFCC Expands ESL Program to Serve Over 500 Students

CFCC Wilmington Wilmington, NC (April 3, 2025) — Cape Fear Community College is proud to announce significant growth in its English as a Second Language (ESL) program. The program now serves over 500 students, an increase of 100 students over the previous year. This 26% enrollment increase is attributed to expanded class offerings, strategic outreach efforts, and a commitment to removing barriers to education.

CFCC’s ESL program provides a range of classes tailored to students at all skill levels, from beginning to advanced, ensuring that all learners can improve their English proficiency for work, further education, or daily life. To enhance accessibility, CFCC has broadened its class reach, bringing classes to more locations throughout our service area. Classes are now offered at all four CFCC locations, the Willard Outreach Center, and Cape Fear Middle School in Rocky Point, NC. In addition, CFCC has partnered with the Wilmington Islamic Center to offer courses to their participants.

“The Wilmington Islamic Center deeply values our partnership with Cape Fear Community College in providing essential ESL classes to our community members,” said Fareeth Ahamed Habeeb Rahman, Member of the Shura Board, Wilmington Islamic Center. “Together, we’re empowering individuals with the language skills needed to thrive.”

The ESL program serves a diverse population of students beyond just Spanish speakers. Students come from around the world and speak many languages, including Russian, Ukrainian, French, German, Arabic, Portuguese, and many others.

“By meeting students where they are, literally and academically, we’re creating more opportunities for language learners to thrive,” said Erin Easton, CFCC Vice President of Economic and Workforce Development. “This growth reflects our team’s dedication to expanding access.”

Through expanded locations and a varied class format, the ESL program ensures that more individuals have the support they need to succeed personally and professionally.
