What is a CNC Machinist?

A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machinist operates and programs machine tools such as lathes, mills, and grinders that are controlled by a computer to produce precision metal or plastic parts. To produce high-quality parts, machinists set up machines, write and test programs, and make adjustments as needed.

Program Overview

The ACE CNC Machining Pathway at Cape Fear Community College provides a structured, two-step approach that moves students from foundational CNC knowledge to hands-on, career-ready skills in advanced manufacturing.

Step 1: Required Prerequisite – ACE Online CNC Training

All students must complete the ACE online CNC training prior to enrolling in the hands-on bootcamp. The self-paced course introduces CNC fundamentals, CAM instruction using Fusion 360, virtual machining, machining dynamics, and machining cost fundamentals. Completion of all modules and quizzes is required.

Online Registration

Step 2: Student-Initiated Hands-On CNC Bootcamp

After completing the online prerequisite, students must initiate registration for the in-person CNC bootcamp. Completion of Step 1 is verified prior to enrollment confirmation. Space is limited. Register early.
