What You’ll Learn

During the three (3), 100-hour courses, you will learn the following:

Please note: Each class accepts a maximum of 12 students. Classes must be taken and passed in the order below.

Intro to Dog Grooming
  • History of grooming and developments over the years
  • Canine anatomy including joint anatomy
  • Type of grooming supplies and tools
  • Maintaining a safe work environment for yourself and the pets you are grooming
  • Preliminary steps in dog grooming
  • Bathing, brushing, and drying
  • Clipper instruction
  • Scissoring instruction
Intermediate Dog Grooming
  • Dog breeds and temperaments
  • Identifying common skin and medical disorders and hot to report them to a pet’s owner
  • Pet First Aid and CPR training and certification
  • Nexderma training and certification
  • Advanced steps in dog grooming
  • Finishing touches
  • Intermediate Clipper instruction
  • Intermediate Scissoring instruction
  • Dog body styles
  • Grooming process for puppies and seniors
Advanced Dog Grooming
  • Nail trimming, ear cleaning, eye care, and wrinkle cleaning
  • Techniques and procedures based on the type of coats
  • Dental care
  • Advanced Clipper instruction
  • Advanced Scissoring instruction
  • Grooming process for dogs with health issues and dogs with behavioral issues
  • Career-building skills for dog groomers
  • Seeking employment in the field – job search, resume, and interview techniques
  • Opening your own business – business plan, budget, and marketing

You will also be trained for the following certifications:

  • Pet First Aid and CPR training
  • Nexderma training and certification

*This program meets the training requirements for students to earn the Professional Groomer Credential through the World Pet Association.


Dog grooming is a vital part of the well-being and health of a dog, which can improve its quality of life. In the United States, the projected job growth for dog groomers is 33% and the annual job openings are 332,700. In North Carolina, the projected job growth is 18% and the projected annual job openings are 2,028.


The Dog Grooming courses are hybrid.

  • Tuesdays from 12-3 pm class is held at the CFCC downtown campus.
  • Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12-3 p.m. lab is held at Tender Loving Care Dog Grooming and Academy
  • There will be some coursework completed online each week as well.
