Student Spotlight: Justin Wilson, Recipient of the Howe Scholarship

Cape Fear Community College Architectural Technology student Justin Wilson has big dreams for the future, and thanks to the $3,000 Howe Scholarship, he is one step closer to achieving them.
Justin grew up in Wilmington and always had an interest in construction and design. After earning his degree in Construction Management at CFCC in 2022, he decided to return and pursue Architectural Technology to complement his skill set. “Typically, people who go into construction management are not into design and vice versa, but I think it is well appreciated when somebody in design also has a background in construction management,” Justin shared.
During his time at CFCC, Justin discovered a passion for sustainability. “I have learned a lot more about sustainability practices. That has become a lot more interesting to me than it once was, leading me to think about different career options in the future.”
Justin credits the CFCC faculty for inspiring and encouraging him along the way. “Megan Barnes, the head of the Architectural Technology program, is just wonderful across the board. She is the reason I applied for the Howe Scholarship.”
Receiving the Howe Scholarship has been life-changing for Justin.
“It will take care of tuition this semester and next semester, so those are my last two. I do not have to worry about financial aid or picking up extra restaurant shifts to pay for school. It gives me the time to focus.”
The Howe Scholarship Endowment was named in honor of the Howe family, a family of at least four generations of African-American builders and carpenters who contributed immensely to construction in Wilmington from the mid-19th century into the early 20th century. The scholarship was established in celebration of the resilience, fortitude, talent, and imagination of the African-American community in the Wilmington area, and in appreciation of its many contributions to the construction and beauty of the city. Since 2023, it has been awarded annually to support African-American students pursuing the building arts and sciences, including architecture, construction management, carpentry, and engineering.
Justin says the scholarship not only eases the financial burden of school but also deepens his connection to Wilmington’s history and the scholarship’s mission. “It is heartwarming to see people acknowledge the past and support students like me who want to continue contributing to the field. It makes me even more motivated to succeed.”
As he prepares to graduate, Justin has his sights set on a career in design-build. “Custom homes or small-scale commercial development has always been on my mind. Working for a company that delivers design and construction together is really the way construction should be.”
When asked what advice he has for other students, Justin keeps it simple: “Just do it. A lot of people do not apply for scholarships, but you learn a lot about yourself when you have to write an essay. And for the Architectural Technology program, know what you want, but do not let anything hold you back. It is a really well-rounded education.”
For Justin, CFCC has been the bridge between passion and profession. With the support of the Howe Scholarship, he is ready to take the next step in building his future.
