Three sisters to graduate from CFCC health science programs
Wilmington, NC – Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) is proud to announce the graduation of three sisters — Esmeralda, Aidee, and Imelda Gonzalez. As first-generation college students with parents who immigrated to the United States from Mexico, they have demonstrated hard work and determination. Commuting daily from Garland, NC, the sisters have supported each other throughout their academic journey.
The graduates:
- Esmeralda (24) is graduating from the inaugural Medical Laboratory Technology program. Following graduation, she accepted a position at Novant Health as a Medical Laboratory Technician in a microbiology lab.
- Aidee (22) is graduating from the Dental Assisting program. After completing her certification, she wants to work in an office close to home.
- Imelda (21) is completing her diploma in the Pharmacy Technology program. She aspires to work alongside her sister, Esmeralda, at Novant Health.
“I believe my bilingual upbringing in an immigrant family strongly influenced my decision to pursue a healthcare career,” explained Imelda. “Hospitals and clinical settings often lack representation of LatinX employees who can effectively communicate healthcare needs and assessments in Spanish. I am eager to bridge this gap and provide vital communication to these individuals in their native language.”
“As a community college president, witnessing three sisters, each a first-generation college student, graduate simultaneously from our health science programs fills me with immense pride,” said Jim Morton, CFCC President. “Their accomplishments highlight the impact that education can have on families and the community, and they represent what determination and perseverance can achieve.”
