Ellianna is happy to share her experience at CFCC.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ENROLL AT CFCC?

I knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare, but I was uncertain about the specific path I wanted to take. Becoming a nurse or a doctor were not appealing options for me, as I realized I didn’t want to work in such close proximity to patients. But, I do like learning about medicines and how they affect our bodies.

I began exploring various healthcare fields to determine alternative careers that are in line with my interests and strengths. That’s when I came across the CFCC Pharmacy Technology program.

This program provides an opportunity to work in the healthcare industry while maintaining a slight distance from direct patient care. So, I enrolled in the CFCC Pharmacy Technology program. I am thrilled to have found a program that perfectly matches my goals. Also, it is a more affordable option than a four-year college.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM ORIGINALLY?

I am from Mooresville, N.C. I knew after I graduated from high school I wanted to get out of my hometown. I also knew I wanted to move to Wilmington to begin this new chapter in my life.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AT CFCC?

I am really enjoying my time here in the CFCC Pharmacy Technology program. The smaller class size allows us to develop closer relationships with our classmates, and it feels like we truly get to know each other. Additionally, the one-on-one interaction with our instructors is invaluable. It gives us the opportunity to ask questions, seek guidance, and receive personalized attention, enhancing our learning experience.

I’m part of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), and it’s been amazing. As a pharmacy tech student, I received a scholarship through PTK that’s specifically for us. It’s called the Walgreens Pharmacy Technician Certification scholarship, and it covers the certification exam fees. So when the time comes for me to take the exam, I don’t have to stress about the money. It’s a huge relief, and I can focus on nailing that certification.

One aspect I appreciate about CFCC and the Wilmington community is the sense of freedom it offers. Unlike traditional on-campus programs, we have to live off-campus and have our own place. This freedom allows us to experience a taste of adulting and take on the responsibilities that come with living independently. It’s not just about receiving training and employment experience but also about gaining valuable life skills and independence, which adds a unique dimension to my overall college experience.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER GRADUATION?

My goal is to begin my career at Novant Health, and I’m open to exploring opportunities in different locations. While I love the beach, I appreciate the beauty of the mountains too. I’m not opposed to relocating to various areas if it means finding the right hospital environment for my career growth.

HOW HAS CFCC HELPED PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR NEXT STEP?

CFCC has done an excellent job of equipping me with valuable clinical opportunities as part of the program. By rotating through various clinical sites, I get to explore different aspects of the field and figure out what I like and what doesn’t resonate with me. It’s all about that hands-on, real-life experience. Plus, I’m making connections and networking with potential future employers. It’s an amazing opportunity to grow my network and get my foot in the door.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE CONSIDERING STUDYING AT CFCC?

Definitely take your education seriously. It will be very rewarding in the end. Even if seems stressful at first, make sure you ask questions and reach out to your advisors and instructors for one-on-one meetings. That’s helped me a lot. Take advantage of the resources at CFCC.

CAREER OUTLOOK AND SUCCESS

A career as a pharmacy technician offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute to patient care while working alongside pharmacists in various healthcare settings. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, pharmacy technician positions are projected to grow by 22,400 positions between 2021 and 2031, driven by an aging population and increased demand for prescription medications.

For those interested in pursuing this career path, CFCC’s Pharmacy Technology program stands out with its impressive track record of a 100% employment rate for graduates. The program provides comprehensive training and hands-on clinical experience, preparing students for success in the dynamic field of pharmacy technology.

“All of our students are offered a position at their clinicals,” commented Pharmacy Technology Program director Kasey Price. “I also get emails from pharmacists in the community who are looking to fill full-time and part-time positions. Last year, my inbox was full of requests, and I had to cut them off because I didn’t have any students left.”

CFCC students stand out due to their active participation in six different clinical sites throughout the duration of the pharmacy technology program. This extensive hands-on experience provides them with invaluable practical skills and a comprehensive understanding of various healthcare settings. Upon completing the associate degree program, these students boast an impressive accumulation of 600 clinical hours, enhancing their expertise and readiness for the workforce.

Furthermore, with an associate degree in pharmacy technology, students enjoy higher earning potential, as the combination of practical experience and a recognized degree opens doors to better job opportunities in the field. CFCC’s program effectively prepares students for success in the pharmacy technology profession.
