Employee Spotlight: Jocelinne Perfecto
CFCC’s Latino Outreach Coordinator, Jocelinne Perfecto, brims with enthusiasm as she embarks on her mission to make a positive impact on the lives of current and prospective Latino students. With a passion for education and firsthand experience as the daughter of immigrants from Dallas, Texas, Jocelinne understands the challenges faced by those seeking a better life in the U.S.
Inspired to support Latino students, Jocelinne conducted in-depth research on North Carolina programs and scholarships designed to support Latino students. Armed with this knowledge, she is determined to bridge the gap for aspiring scholars facing residency obstacles, as well as other barriers that prohibit the Latino population from pursuing their educational dreams at CFCC.
Jocelinne’s journey to becoming the Latino Outreach Coordinator at CFCC has been marked by significant achievements. First, Jocelinne has been recognized as a 2023 LatinXEd Fellow for her outstanding commitment to fostering equitable educational opportunities for Latinx communities.
Second, her recent attainment of a master’s degree in educational psychology, with a focus on understanding learning and development, has equipped her with best practices on effective student support and empowerment. Even with the duties that come with being a dedicated mother to a one-year-old son, Jocelinne’s drive and determination to uplift and guide aspiring students remain steadfast, making her an inspiring role model within CFCC’s community and beyond.
WHAT YEAR DID YOU START WORKING AT CFCC AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE?
I started working at the beginning of the 2023 spring semester. After staying at home with my son for his first year while pursuing my master’s degree, I was ready to get back to work. We ended up in North Carolina because my husband’s family is here. My husband is a Marine veteran and he will be attending CFCC in the fall to study Cyber Crime Technology.
I began applying for employment and this position opened up. Thankfully, before I started at CFCC we were able to move to Hampstead which shortens my commute quite a bit.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK?
Engaging in a continuous learning process is something I truly enjoy, especially in my current role, which revolves around advocating for DACA and undocumented students. Staying abreast of the ever-evolving changes that impact the students I support is both challenging and rewarding. Additionally, I find immense satisfaction in conducting outreach initiatives within high schools, guiding and assisting students in their educational journey.
It’s fulfilling to connect with various community organizations and higher education institutions that share the same mission of empowering all students to succeed. Collaborating with these organizations, we work together to offer academic and financial support. The nature of my position keeps me focused on making a positive impact on the lives of these students.
WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING WHAT DO YOU DO?
Having completed my studies, I’m gradually finding my rhythm again, relishing more quality time with my son and exploring my hobbies. To be candid, becoming a mother somewhat obscured my sense of identity. Currently, I find myself in a peculiar state of uncertainty, contemplating whether to return to school for a second master’s degree or pursue a Ph.D.
WHO HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR EDUCATION OR CAREER PATH?
The most profound impact on my educational journey and career path came from my parents. As a first-generation high school and college graduate, I faced unique challenges, and although my parents couldn’t offer extensive assistance, they remained my unwavering champions. Their support and genuine interest in my pursuits have been a constant source of motivation. Their encouragement and belief in me have been instrumental in shaping my path and driving me to achieve my goals.
WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
From a young age, my parents taught me that I must fight for my desires and keep moving forward. Their words have been a guiding force throughout my life, motivating me to overcome challenges and strive for my aspirations.
WHAT IS SOMETHING NOT MANY KNOW PEOPLE ABOUT YOU?
I was in the marching band drumline in high school. I played the snare drum. I’ve always felt drawn to music. I used to sing in a church choir. In high school, I went through a metal band phase. As often as I could I would go to rock concerts. I still like the music, I just don’t look the part anymore.
