Student Spotlight: Frank Chasteen
When Frank Chasteen left his 40-year career in the automotive industry, he wasn’t just switching careers. He started a whole new chapter in his life. With years spent as a mechanic and in auto parts, Frank made the courageous decision to return to school and pursue a degree in accounting at Cape Fear Community College.
“I came to school to find a job that would be easier on my body,” Frank shared. “I have back issues, and I just couldn’t be huddling over cars anymore.”
As a Marine Corps veteran and lifelong worker in physically demanding jobs, Frank knew the transition wouldn’t be easy. However, CFCC offered the education he needed and an environment where he could thrive.
“I love it here. I love the downtown campus. I can take my lunch break, walk down to the water, and just enjoy the views,” he said.
Overcoming Challenges with the Learning Lab
Like many non-traditional students, Frank had concerns about returning to school, particularly in subjects like English. “English has never been one of my favorite subjects,” he admitted. “Even in the service, I could barely write half a page to send to my great aunt.”
That’s when he discovered the CFCC Learning Lab.
“Mr. Grissett, my first English instructor, told me about it,” Frank recalled. “Day one, I couldn’t go over there because they weren’t open yet. But day two? I was there signing up.”
The Learning Lab quickly became an essential part of Frank’s academic journey. “If I have questions, there’s somebody that can answer them. I’ve been using it since day one,” he said.
Whether it was math, English, or accounting, the tutors and resources at the Learning Lab provided the guidance Frank needed. He credits the Learning Lab with helping him achieve academic success. “English was a challenge, but it was my highest grade last semester,” he said proudly.
“I go to the Learning Lab, sit down, and say, ‘This is what I have to do. Give me some pointers.’ Then I work on it myself, bring it back, and they help me polish it up.”
Achievements and Advice for Future Students
Frank’s hard work has paid off. “I’ve made the President’s List and the Dean’s List twice,” he shared. “I tell the younger students, ‘If I can do it, you can do it.'”
His biggest advice for fellow students is to take advantage of the available resources. “Don’t think you have to do it alone,” Frank emphasized. “There are some that can, but if you’re not sure, ask for help. The Learning Lab is part of what you’re paying for. It doesn’t cost extra, and it’s there to help you succeed.”
As Frank continues his journey toward becoming an accountant, he looks forward to a future where he can work from home, enjoy fishing, and finally have the work-life balance he has wanted.
“If I can enjoy life now instead of working 70-hour weeks, that’s what matters,” he said with a smile.
At CFCC, students like Frank prove that it’s never too late to start over and achieve academic success, especially with the right support system in place. To learn more about the resources available at CFCC, visit cfcc.edu/services-and-support .
