Meet Ashlyn Lawson, a second-year Medical Laboratory Technology student at Cape Fear Community College. She is set to graduate this May and already has job interviews lined up. After working in phlebotomy, Ashlyn discovered her passion for laboratory science and its critical role in healthcare.

“I love that this field is very science-based. You’re dealing with all the medical and diagnostic aspects that help doctors make important decisions, but you get to work behind the scenes in the lab,” she shared.

CFCC’s Medical Laboratory Technology program prepares students for a vital role in healthcare. Medical Laboratory Technicians perform, evaluate, and ensure the accuracy of laboratory tests that aid in diagnosing and treating patients.

The program trains individuals in collecting, processing, and analyzing biological specimens, leading to careers in hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices, medical laboratories, government agencies, and more.

One of Ashlyn’s favorite parts of the program is the supportive environment. “Everyone in this class is really close-knit. It’s great teamwork, and if one of us is confused, we help each other out.”

Ashlyn has some advice for students considering healthcare but who are unsure about direct patient care. “This is the perfect field to get in your zone, get your work done, enjoy what you do, and still make a meaningful impact.”

CFCC’s Medical Laboratory Technology program graduates may be eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification Exam (ASCP-BOC), a key step in launching a successful career in this high-demand field!
