CFCC grad completes associate degree after 32-year-gap

Curtis

After a gap of 32 years, Curtis Thompson’s journey has reached a remarkable milestone as he completes his associate degree.

Originally from Plymouth, NC, Curtis Thompson’s love for the vibrant charm of Wilmington, where he vacationed during his youth, led him to make the life-changing move for a refreshing change of scenery.

Curtis found himself established in a comfortable routine at the Village Market, his dedicated workplace since 1997. Yet, the passage of time had brought forth a sense of restlessness and a yearning for change. Despite his readiness to venture beyond his familiar realm, Curtis discovered that his skills were not as marketable as they once were.

Recognizing the need to bolster his qualifications, he made a pivotal decision. Drawing upon the unfinished aspirations of his past, Curtis turned to CFCC with a resolute purpose – to finally complete the associate degree he had embarked upon in 1984. In 2022, Curtis decided it was time to continue his academic journey.

EMBRACING CHALLENGES AND SEEKING SUPPORT

Enrolling at CFCC proved to be a surprisingly swift and hassle-free process for Curtis. However, stepping back into the world of academia after years in the workforce proved to be a daunting endeavor.

Curtis’ journey took a serendipitous turn when he discovered an invaluable resource in the Counseling Center at CFCC. Here, he found solace and understanding, particularly through his interactions with Emily Varnell.

“Emily’s compassion provided me with a safe space to share my fears and uncertainties, allowing me to shed any shame in seeking assistance,” confided Curtis. “The Counseling Center has a welcoming and nonjudgmental atmosphere. I have come to understand that everyone faces challenges and it’s perfectly okay to ask for help.”

PILOTING THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Embracing a hybrid learning format, Curtis’s classes at CFCC were a blend of in-person and online instruction. He cherished the positive environment of physical classrooms, where a sense of purpose and learning is tangible.

In-person classes provided Curtis an opportunity to immerse himself fully in the educational experience, away from the potential distractions that a home setting might entail. Moreover, direct access to instructors proved to be a valuable asset, as Curtis could seek immediate clarification and guidance, eliminating the frustration of sifting through potentially inaccurate online information.

CFCC’S SUPPORTIVE INSTRUCTORS

Curtis discovered a surprising favorite among his classes at CFCC. Despite past frustrations with accounting, he found himself drawn to the subject under the guidance of Terri Andress. This unexpected affinity was rooted in Andress’ patient and dedicated approach to teaching.

Curtis, who had previously struggled with accounting concepts, found solace in Terri’s willingness to explain principles repeatedly until they took root. The power of repetition became a key tool for Curtis to grasp and retain the intricate world of accounting, transforming his perception of the subject from one of confusion to one of genuine interest.

Another standout course for Curtis was the college transfer success class. This course held special significance for him due to its relevance to his own journey. Curtis recognized the valuable lesson he had learned – the importance of seeking guidance and not hesitating to ask for help.

“One of the reasons I am completing my degree at this stage in my life is because I had not been taught this information before,” shared Curtis. “I tried to maneuver through college by myself without any support. CFCC offered all the resources I needed to reach my goal.”

GUIDED TO GRADUATION

Curtis’s path to graduation was further illuminated by Patrick Pittman, his Academic Advisor. While Curtis initially grappled with the idea of reverse transferring credits, Patrick’s expertise and evaluation of his transcript revealed a clearer path.

Patrick assured Curtis that he was indeed eligible to graduate without the need for reverse transfer, prompting Curtis to complete his Intent to Graduate. With this pivotal step taken, Curtis eagerly anticipates walking at the upcoming commencement ceremony, a testament to his determination and the unwavering support of CFCC’s resources and staff.

CHARTING THE PATH FORWARD

In the wake of his graduation, Curtis stands at the crossroads of possibility, contemplating his next steps with an open mind. While the path ahead remains uncertain, he harbors the notion of furthering his education, intrigued by the prospect of expanding his knowledge and horizons.

Curtis emerges from this transformative experience with a deepened self-assuredness, a testament to his ability to navigate challenges and seize opportunities, whatever they may be. With his options laid out before him, Curtis embraces the future with a spirit of optimism.

“Even though I haven’t made a firm decision about my next step, I feel refreshed having gone through this experience,” Curtis commented. “CFCC has given me the confidence to handle whatever comes next.”

ENCOURAGEMENT FOR PROSPECTIVE CFCC STUDENTS

Wholeheartedly, Curtis extends his earnest advice to anyone contemplating the prospect of studying at CFCC: seize this remarkable opportunity. He emphasizes the invaluable level of support and guidance readily available within CFCC’s nurturing environment, highlighting the deeply enriching personal interactions that set it apart from other educational avenues.

Curtis’s journey at CFCC stands as a testament to the fulfillment of his aspirations. With conviction, he encourages others to embark on their educational journey at CFCC, assured that it will not only be a pathway to academic success but a transformative experience that leaves a lasting impact on their personal growth and accomplishments.

“At CFCC, I achieved my goal,” remarked Curtis. “I will feel accomplished walking across the stage and getting my degree.”
