Emma Stevens Found Her Fit in Dental Assisting

When Emma Stevens graduated from Hoggard High School in 2022, she had already earned her Associate in Arts degree through CFCC’s Career and College Promise/Dual Enrollment program. But despite her head start, she wasn’t sure what to do next.

“As soon as I had everything set and done, I was lost,” Emma said. “I didn’t have a plan, but I knew I wanted to come back to Cape Fear.”

After a year exploring her options, she landed on CFCC’s Dental Assisting diploma, a three-semester program that prepares students to enter the workforce immediately. Within weeks of applying, she was accepted.

Rotations Tailored to Student Interests

Emma knew she had made the right choice from the very first semester.

“We started in our clinic, and by the second semester, we were already in clinical rotations,” she said. “You get the full experience.”

Students in the program get hands-on training in local dental offices, with rotations tailored to their interests. Emma chose pediatrics, orthodontics, and general dentistry, and by the end of the program, she had rotated through several different offices.

“The instructors ensure you’re set up for success,” she said. “They’re some of the best instructors you could ever have. They care about you and value your time. They’ll help you find a better fit if a rotation isn’t working. You never feel stuck or alone.”

From Rotation to Employment

Her final rotation at Wilmington Kids Dentist turned into a job offer.

“I remember my first day there. Everyone was so friendly. I’m a pretty shy person, but I wanted to make a good impression, so I tried my best,” she said.

A few weeks later, she was offered a full-time position. “I love it here. I love pediatrics. I enjoy working with kids and their parents.”

Now, she’s preparing to take the Dental Assisting National Board Examination to become a Certified Dental Assistant.

What started as uncertain turned into a career Emma is proud of and excited about. For students considering dental assisting, she’s quick to recommend the program.

“A smile is a way to your heart and other people’s hearts,” she said. “It says a lot about who you are. As a dental assistant, you’re caring for people and if you can help someone feel confident in their smile, it lifts everyone up.”

Ready to Get Started? Applications Still Open

The Dental Assisting program is still accepting applications for the fall semester, with limited seats remaining. An information session will be held on Monday, July 28, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the HHS building, room 101, located at 319 North Third Street.
