Employee Spotlight: Benny Hill

Benny Hill

Benny Hill is more than a talented musician. He’s a teacher, mentor, and inspiration to his students and the Cape Fear Community College community. With over 40 years of experience playing saxophone, Benny uses his love of music to guide his students and support their dreams. He makes a big difference through the CFCC Benny Hill Fundraising Concert, an annual event that raises money for scholarships for CFCC music students. We talked with Benny to learn about his journey with music and how he’s making a lasting impact at CFCC.

How long have you been a part of CFCC?

I started part-time in 2010 and became a full-time instructor in 2018. So, I’m coming up on my 15th year at Cape Fear.

When did your journey with music begin?

I got my first saxophone for Christmas when I was 12. My dad played piano and would have friends over to jam, and one of them played the saxophone. I’d sit in the back and listen, completely mesmerized. I asked for a saxophone that Christmas and the rest is history.

Did you have formal training, or were you self-taught?

I started in band but also began taking lessons in high school with Dr. Frank Bongiorno. He was a professor at UNCW and has since retired. He taught me through high school and undergrad. I earned a bachelor’s degree in saxophone performance from UNCW and a master’s in jazz studies from Northern Illinois.

What inspired you to start the CFCC Benny Hill Fundraising Concert?

Eight years ago, a very talented and promising student told me he wasn’t sure if he could return to CFCC because his family couldn’t afford it. I wanted to help, so I started a scholarship for him. I knew I couldn’t keep funding it on my own, so I came up with the idea of hosting a concert to raise money. That’s how it all began.

Do you have a favorite success story from a student who benefited from the concert funds?

Aiden is a student I’m really proud of. When he started, he had been playing saxophone for a while, but during his time here, he made incredible progress. Now, he’s at UNCW, and he’s doing really well.

Last year’s concert sold out at the Wilson Center. How did that feel?

It was totally surprising. I got messages saying they couldn’t get tickets, so I went to the box office to check. They told me it was sold out, and I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t even have a ticket for my mom, but we worked it out. The support from the community was amazing, and it made me feel really good.

Who are some of your musical inspirations?

One of my biggest inspirations is Wessell Anderson. I actually had him here last year as our guest artist. He gave me an incredible jazz saxophone lesson and taught me what music is truly about. He’s been very influential in my life. I wouldn’t be where I am without his mentorship.

Can you tell us about the band that plays with you during the concert?

We formed the band 25 years ago at UNCW. We were a tight-knit group, rehearsing every Friday and playing three or four nights weekly. Over time, life took us in different directions. One member became a Mohs surgeon at UNC. Another moved to New York. We reunite yearly for this concert. They all donate their time to make it happen, and it’s very special.

What’s your vision for the future of CFCC’s music department?

The department has been growing, and I’d like to see it expand even more. I’d love to grow the band and maybe even start a concert band someday. That would be a great addition to the program.

Why should people come to this year’s concert?

It’s a chance to enjoy great music while supporting a great cause. Every note helps a student’s dream come true, and I can’t think of a better reason to come out and enjoy the show.

Benny Hill Quartet Fundraising Concert is Thursday, January 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Wilson Center. For ticket information, visit wilsoncentertickets.com . Don’t miss the opportunity to experience Benny Hill’s passion and talent while supporting CFCC’s incredible music students!
