Graduate Spotlight: Jeffrey Edwards
Born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina, Jeff is set to graduate from Cape Fear Community College, marking a significant milestone years after he first left school to enter the workforce. Choosing CFCC to fulfill his long-held goal of completing his education, Jeff has skillfully balanced work, family, and his studies.
“There was always a part of me that wanted to finish what I started,” Jeff says.
His motivation is deeply rooted in his experiences in various industries and the personal growth that came from his time away from academia. As he prepares to graduate, Jeff reflects on his time at CFCC, particularly the transition to online learning and the support he received from faculty like Ms. Puckett.
Where are you from originally?
I’m a true Wilmingtonian, born and raised in Wilmington, NC.
Why did you decide to enroll at CFCC, and how did it align with your goals?
After graduating high school 27 years ago, I attended CFCC briefly. However, I was unsure of what career path to pursue at the time, so I joined the workforce instead. Over the years, I worked in various industries, such as retail and pest control, gaining invaluable experience and knowledge.
Recently, in late spring of 2022, while working downtown, I passed by the CFCC campus and felt a sudden urge to explore the possibility of returning to school. Completing my degree has always been a dream of mine, and raising children has only strengthened my desire to pursue this goal.
Can you share some highlights of your experience at CFCC?
Learning at CFCC has been a rewarding experience for me. I have had to adapt to technological advancements, notably the transition from pen and paper to online learning. It was an adjustment that required some adaptation, but I am incredibly grateful for the convenience that virtual classes have afforded me. I have balanced my full-time job, family life, and studies with minimal disruption. This opportunity has been a tremendous blessing.
Did you have a favorite class or instructor during your time here?
My favorite class was ECO-150 with Ms. Puckett, which I took during the summer of 2023. The class was intense due to the shorter summer term, but my passion for learning grew stronger. Ms. Puckett was always available and encouraged us to reach out with any questions or concerns, day or night. One Friday afternoon, I called her with a question about an assignment and left a voicemail.
Surprisingly, she called me back later that evening to discuss the question and ensure I fully understood the material. Her dedication to the success of her students was inspiring, and I wish there were more classes in my program of study that she taught.
What are your plans post-graduation?
In a perfect world, I would love to work remotely from home and help run or lead a thriving business. However, for now, I have recently secured a job in a field related to my degree, and I am excited to use my educational experience and lessons to excel in my new role.
What advice would you offer to individuals considering CFCC for their studies?
The familiar words of Nike’s tagline come to mind, ‘Just Do It.’ I assure you that you won’t regret it. CFCC provides an exceptional level of resources and support that is unparalleled in other community colleges and universities. These include computer device check-out, childcare, financial aid, tutoring, and much more.
Do you have any final thoughts or comments you wish to share?
CFCC has been a life-changing experience for me, and I can confidently say that it has transformed me for the better. I have learned that no challenge is insurmountable through determination and a positive attitude.
