Graduate Spotlight: William Siemon
Meet William Siemon, a standout graduate who began his studies at CFCC at 16, thanks to the Career and College Promise (CCP) program. By 18, he earned his Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degree. William has been accepted and will participate in the Disney College Program (DCP) until January. Following this, he aims to transfer to a university next year to pursue a bachelor’s degree in political science.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM ORIGINALLY?
I was born in Cary, North Carolina. My family and I moved to Hampstead in 2017.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ENROLL AT CFCC?
I wanted to take advantage of the Career and College Promise (CCP) program. This allowed me to start taking classes at 16. By participating in the program for six continuous semesters, I earned an AA and an AS degree before turning 18.
WHY DID IT MAKE SENSE TO YOU?
The CCP program allows high school students to take college courses on a college campus with college professors. The class sizes are smaller to high school. The professors have office hours and are always available to assist and address any questions throughout the semester. What is there to think about? It was a win-win for me.
I was earning transferable college credits the entire time I was here. There was a team behind me since day one, and I definitely felt that. This option was always the most sensible, not only financially but also in terms of exposure to college-level coursework, the professors, and campus life, which has given me a head start for the upcoming year. Instead of being anxious about leaving home and attending a four-year university, I am excited and prepared.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AT CFCC?
When I first started CFCC, I was nervous. I was 16. I did not know anyone on campus. I thought about dropping out. I was advised to speak to someone before I made any decisions. So, I met with Joseph Styron, the head of the CCP program. I shared my concerns and anxiety, and we discussed options. He introduced me to Beth Smedley, a CFCC counselor, and we went from there. I was hooked up with a great counselor who introduced me to valuable tools that helped me navigate those early days.
Soon afterward, I joined the Student Government Association (SGA) as a senator. I joined the Sustainability Committee, started volunteering at the CFCC food pantry, and met many great people.
I was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society during my second semester here and met Kate Santhuff, the former Director, and other PTK members. This was yet another opportunity presented to me by being on campus, allowing me to meet more amazing students and faculty here. The more involved I was on campus, the more comfortable I became.
Last year, I ran for the Public Information Officer position at SGA and won. That was another event that steered me in a new direction. Being part of the leadership team has opened more doors for me as I have gotten to interact with the Board at campus events and activities and attend conferences throughout the state. John Metzger, our SGA advisor, has become a mentor to me. He has been an extraordinary teacher who is kind and extremely generous.
DID YOU HAVE A FAVORITE CLASS OR INSTRUCTOR?
My favorite teacher is tough because I have enjoyed most of my teachers and classes here, but I have to say Katrin Milne, my Spanish teacher, stands out. She’s an extraordinary person, a great professor, a farmer, and a beekeeper!
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER GRADUATION?
I was accepted to the Disney College Program, which I will be in until January. After the Disney College Program, I plan to complete my bachelor’s degree in political science next year.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE CONSIDERING STUDYING AT CFCC?
First, you made a great choice! Next, get involved, meet people, join SGA, attend events, and get to know your fellow students.
ANY FINAL COMMENTS?
Thank you. CFCC is truly a “community” college. This entire community surrounds you and lifts you up if you allow them to. I feel privileged to have been part of this place.
